Ukraine calls for deployment of UN troops around Russian-occupied nuclear power plant

Ukrainian officials voiced support for deploying United Nations peacekeeper troops to establish a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant Wednesday.

Ukraine's support for the move comes one day after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned of a potentially "catastrophic" disaster at the plant. The IAEA deployed a team to Ukraine to inspect the facility last week. IAEA general director Rafael Grossi called for a demilitarized zone around the station.

"The first important safety pillar that exists in any nuclear facility is not to violate its physical integrity," Grossi said Tuesday. "And unfortunately…this has happened. This happened and this continues to happen. The physical attack, wittingly or unwittingly – the hits that this facility has received and that I could personally see and assess together with my experts – is simply unacceptable."

Utterly predictable. Since there is no evidence that the Russians are shelling themselves, how about... no.

This will be very difficult for the UN to comply with...

The UN has very stringent rules related to the local availability of women and children as rape victims for their troops...

"Ukraine Deep State war profiteers and money launderers seeks to make the war World War Three."

Probably more accurate.

Why would Russia agree to that given that Ukraine is the one that has been shelling the plant?

Ukraine will say or do anything to get other nation’s troop into the fray.

I'm not sure why anyone would object to this. The Ukes didn't defend the place because of the obvious risk. If the Russians basically say "we're willing to fight from it so you can't even attack us", that's crap.

Nuke plants are far too dangerous to make them a pawn.

Sure . Send the Canadians, the Irish, the Kenyans. That’ll work.

Did they offer to pull back the AZOV troops and clowns that the evidence presented at the UN so far suggests did the shelling that damaged the cooling system power infrastructure for the nuclear plant in the first place?

(Or are we still at "OK, there are SOME Nazis in Ukraine, but they are GOOD Nazis...")

Will they be pulling those back to make room for these "UN Troops"?

Will those troops be doing any "Fact Checking"?

How about starting with who benefits from a nuclear risk escalation there?

How many years worth of our GDP will continue to be laundered there?

Of course not. Everyone knows the UN has no troops of its own, and so does Z.

Peacekeeping mission mandates, all mandates for sending troops from troop-contributing nations, are issued by the UNSC and only the UNSC. Seeing as how Russia is a Perm Five Member ... good luck with thst, Z.

Ukraine is desperate to internationalize the war. Surely, they figure that the first step is getting an international military mission into the combat zone for any purpose however limited and then after that, expand it. The Western Neocons want the same thing. And that is why the Ukrainians were shelling the nuclear plant and blaming it on the Russians. At least, that is my best guess.

If the Russians are using the plant as a defensive position, which they must be if there are troops there to be shelled in the first place, then that's the problem.

It probably would work. But it may be better to send more obvious neutrals. The Canadians are in NATO and the Irish are very publicly pro Ukraine.

The Kenyans should be fine, also Indians, Brazilians, Filipinos, etc. The coming winter might be a problem for some of these people though.
