Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial board questions Fetterman's health, ability to serve after stroke

Prominent Pennsylvania newspaper the Pittsburg Post-Gazette is raising concerns over Senate candidate John Fetterman's health following repeated criticisms from his Republican opponent, celebrity doctor-turned-politician Mehmet Oz.

"If Mr. Fetterman is not well enough to debate his opponent, that raises serious concerns about his ability to serve as a United States senator," the Post-Gazette editorial board wrote.

The Fetterman campaign has confirmed the lieutenant governor is attending speech therapy and "doing the hard work" to make a full recovery, according to the editorial board. However, the Oz campaign brings up legitimate voter concerns.

"The Republican’s antics have given Mr. Fetterman a plausible out: He won’t share the stage with someone who has behaved so shamefully," the editorial reads. "But that won’t cut it. Voters have a right to know whether their prospective senator can do the job — including handling the give-and-take of a vigorous debate."

Oz held a press conference Tuesday morning with Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who also said Fetterman's avoidance of debates should raise doubt about whether he can do the job of a senator.

"John Fetterman has refused to agree to any formal debates with Dr. Oz. There's something that's just not right here. In every campaign I ever ran, I did debates... it's an important part of the democratic process," Toomey said in a press release. "I'm here to issue a warning to Pennsylvania voters, you can't do your job as U.S. senator sitting at home firing off snarky tweets.

Toomey also stated he had "doubts" about whether Fetterman "is up to the job" given his recent stumbling during public appearances.

...and he is doing a great job....which is why Democrats will just vote for Fetterman. In fact, most Democrats do not even know Fetterman had a stroke or is incapable of talking.

The Dems in PA want to Lautenberg Fetterman; they know they can’t beat Oz otherwise.

The key, as I see it, is not Fetterman’s health but the town of Braddock.

Fetterman talks about how he was mayor there. Well, Braddock was a mess when he got there and it’s a bigger mess now.

That should be Oz’s attack plan. Show pictures of the town. Do we want all of Pennsylvania to look like Braddock?

Side note: I know Braddock rather well. No disrespect meant to the good people trapped in poverty there. But here’s the thing. Big mouth Fetterman did nothing to help them.

I think he’s got more than a heart problem - I think he has cancer.

I had a much smaller one that I had surgically removed about 20 yrs ago. It was a lipoma. Luckily hasn’t recurred.

I worked with a guy who had a stroke around age 38. Physically, he never had full movement after that. His concentration level dropped by one-third. He slurred in his speech, and probably did get three-quarters of his movement ability back, after a couple of years of hard work.

With this guy? Maybe he had just a moderate stroke, but if so....he needs to really get healthy, lose a bit of weight and get into a low-stress environment. Going to DC as a Senator is a ‘zero-option’.

Well, he’s a democrat so it’s not like he’ll be needing to use his brain a lot.

Lost a lot of weight too. They’re saying he’s been on a diet and usually called for in obese patients with heart issues. But he’s been loosing it fast.

His monster like unhealthy appearance contrasts sharply with a fit physician without need of a speech therapist.

I must confess I do not understand the Post-Gazette editor’s concern. John Fetterman is running for the United States Senate, for God’s sake, a job that requires no manual labor, no thinking and not even an on the job appearance. The only real requirement is to vote as he is told.
Hell, even a comatose senile octogenarian could handle the job as has been proven over the past hundred years or so years by a multitude of senators.
This also applies to the House.

If Oz can win this race and Walker holds on to his lead and wins GA then we’re in pretty good shape. Just need Ron Johnson to hold on to WI.

And to be frank, i’m really worried about the AK senate seat with the RCV. We could get screwed over bad on that seat like we did with Palin’s seat where Repubs got 60% of the vote but lost the seat. So we need some insurance wins in AZ and NV.
