While the Internet and the World Wide Web have certainly impacted the lives of many millions of people it is certainly not the greatest invention of the past millennium, in fact it might not even make the the top ten.
Yup. Penicillin.
Pinball machines in bowling alleys.
“1 Printing Press 1450 Johannes Gutenberg allowed literacy to greatly expand”
Without doubt. It eventually wrested knowledge and education from the hands of the elites and the approved.
“2 Electric Light 1879 Thomas Edison powered countless social changes”
Thomas Edison my chapped ass.
If left to Edison the world would be dependent on DC power. That it’s not is because of NIKOLA TESLA who owned the patent for AC electricity and GAVE IT AWAY because he wanted everyone to benefit from his work.
“3 Automobile 1885 Karl Benz increased personal mobility and freedom”
Small quibble here.
Benz may have produced the first practical horseless carriage but HENRY FORD made it possible to mass produce the automobile so it was affordable to the masses. Mercedes Benz is still identified as an auto for the elite.
“4 Telephone 1876 Alexander Graham Bell spread communication across wide areas”
No quibbles here... but Bell insisted that his telephone be answered by saying “Ahoy” instead of the common hello. Was he a frustrated sailor?
“5 Radio and Television 1895 & 1926 Guglielmo Marconi & John Baird made the world smaller”
Many quibbles here.
Although Baird demonstrated the first television in January, 1926 I’m not sure he patented his invention before Philo Farnsworth patented his all electric television in January 1927. Baird did develop the first color television.
TESLA first demonstrated wireless communication in 1893. The patent office refused Marconi’s patent attempts from 1900 until 1904 because he had used 17 of Tesla’s patents without permission. In 1904 the patent office awarded Marconi the patent for the radio. In 1943 the United States Supreme Court overturned the award and awarded the patent to Tesla.
“6 Vaccination 1796 Edward Jenner protected people from disease”
Vaccinations have saved millions and I ain’t quibbling at all.
Oh, don’t blame Jenner for what Big Pharma has done with vaccines.
“7 Computer 1939 John Atanasoff, et al. transformed business world; predecessor to the Internet”
“8 Airplane 1903 Orville and Wilbur Wright allowed people and products to quickly move”
But we first used it to rain death and destruction from the sky. Can’t blame Wilbur and Orville for that though.
“9 Gas powered tractor 1892 John Froelich started agricultural mechanization”
Thank you Mr Froelich!!
Another area where Henry Ford used his production methods to dramatically lower the cost. The Ford 8N is probably the best ever built. The Farmall H and M series were great too.
“10 Anesthesia 1844 Horace Wells provided a great leap forward for medicine”
Anesthesia, so the surgeon can slice you open and fix whatever is wrong. Not a bad deal at all.
If we were still biting on bullets while the doctor worked we would then need a dentist who would then do his work WITHOUT ANESTHESIA.
Self contained hydraulic rams on a 'Telehandler' made it so this 68 year old man can load 28 or so tons of bales onto a flatbed trailer in less than 20 minutes. Beats to pieces pitch forks and loose hay. Enjoy your milk and steak.
That was my first choice.
Yes they did.
Yes they did.
#2 Germ theory of disease / sterilization Louis Pasteur and Joseph Lister - saved more lives than anyone else in history.
I say #2 because #1 the printing press was a needed precursor.
11. Dominion software
Two greatest inventions ever:
Air conditioning
TV Remote control
π
Yup. Obviates #6 too.
Sweet tarts! π
The George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine....
The Haber process made both world wars possible. yay.
Safe canning of foods is overlooked, imagine explorers and sailors and pioneers and Indian tribes being able to have canned foods.
I left my monkey with Michael Jackson
The greatest gift to mankind, the sweet elixir of life, COFFEE!
