Putin somehow failed to realize that Europe existed, thrived even, for hundreds of years prior to the availability oy Russian gas.

True, but it was Europe that made Russian gas very expensive. All that Russia wanted was payments in Rubles, so they wouldn’t keep getting their money stolen. Other than that, Europe felt a need to play ‘sanctions games’ with Russia, and lost.
