“So Europe is back to buying Russian gas, only it is now using China as an expensive middleman”

That is a tiny fraction of the volume.

The big winners of Russia’s former market share are the USA (American LNG volume has surpassed Russian pipeline volume into Europe, for the first time ever), Norway, Qatar, the Netherlands, Algeria and Azerbaijan. Egypt/Israel looks like they will get as much as they are able to ramp as well (a few percent of the EU market.

The biggest volume beneficiary is American exports.

The latest estimates from the power industry association BDEW show that German gas consumption from Russia fell to 9.5% in August. That’s down from a whopping 60% during the same period last year.

Norway has stepped in to become Germany’s biggest supplier of gas, BDEW data shows, providing almost 38% of German consumption last month. The Netherlands, the second-biggest supplier of Germany, was estimated to have delivered roughly 24% of German gas in August.

Ian Bremmer, president of the political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, said via Twitter last week that it “increasingly looks like Germany can get through the winter without severe rationing” even in the worst-case scenario that Russia turns off the taps completely.

That’s “very good news,” Bremmer said. “Russia’s energy influence over Europe is nearly over.”

Trump offered Germans our gas. They laughed at him. Now many Germans will freeze to death this winter.

Well, Putin is NOT giving televised speeches defaming half of Russia’s people as “dangerous” as Biden just did to half of the American people.

It is a sad day when a horrible bunch of America-haters have installed a demented, mean and nasty old criminal as U.S. president and are using him as their sock puppet for a communist takeover.

https://www.uniper.energy/news/uniper-to-build-germanys-first-lng-terminal-—aim-is-to-diversify-natural-gas-supply-sources

The above is from this past spring.

The parent company is, in essence, owned by the government of Finland.

So where does Finland get its LNG...?

That’s a very good question.

So where does Finland get its LNG...?

Finland will open its first LNG terminal this year and has granted permission for three LNG terminals to be built.

The LNG terminal, in close proximity to the Balticconnector pipeline between Finland and Estonia, should be available next winter and its capacity is meant to cover the gas needs of both Finland and Estonia

That pipeline will never be turned on again. Short term bad news for Germany. Existentially bad for Russia.

Right now they are buying up all the excess gas from China that they aren't using since the Covid lock downs put the Chinese economy in the shitter.

Why not?

Their financial and operations partners in the pipeline like Engie and Wintershall wrote off their investment and left. They took all of their operations and maintenance knowledge and manpower with them. They won't ever come back. And the Russians will never build Nordstream 2.

BS. Countries join NATO through economic pressure: Do it or suffer.

We took Hawaii at the point of a gun but I don’t hear you wanting to give Hawaii back.
