Is western society in the grips of a progressive hysterical epidemic comparable to the Salem Witch Trials?
My guest on Holy Smoke this week, Andrew Doyle, argues precisely that in his book The New Puritans. He suggests that gender ideology, and particularly the dogmas of trans activists, together with the fantasies of Critical Race Theory, are dragging society into an alternative reality that resembles a fanatical religion. But it's one that doesn't have to employ its own ideological police – because actual police forces, along with other powerful institutions including the churches, have signed up to the New Puritanism (usually without understanding it).
Andrew Doyle has a doctorate in Renaissance poetry from Oxford University, so he's well acquainted with the postmodern manipulation of language and epistemology that equip proponents of so-called cancel culture. He'e also someone the new puritans would dearly love to cancel, in his roles as broadcaster, comedian and the creator of Titania McGrath, the hilarious Twitter parody account that's been suspended several times for poking fun at people who enjoy being satirised about as much as your average witchfinder-general.

We, as a species and a culture, are prone to these. Right or left. Communist or Capitalist. Find and identify the Evil Entity threatening to destroy everything and mobilize against it. The only difference between ideologies and groups and cultures seems to be *who* the evil entity is. A powerful thing that seems to lurk at a subconscious level in many humans: “There are evil people out there trying to destroy us, any sacrifice is acceptable to defeat them:. And it’s probably ingrained in us because it’s true, at least some of the time.
Add the ridiculous AGW (man-caused global warming) Theory to the mass psychosis delusions.
Very useful to some people to keep everyone spun up on this.

Arnold Toynbee wrote about this in “A Study of History”. One of the main features for a society is to have an internal and external proletariat as boogeymen in order for the ruling class to retain power.
Early in American history the internal proletariat were African slaves. The external proletariat was either the French or British Empires plus their affiliated Native American nations.
In the Soviet Union you had the kulaks as internal proletariat and Western capitalists as the external proletariat. Which Western power it was depended on the time. For a while it was Germany, then it was the United States plus NATO.
Now the United States has an internal proletariat consisting of middle and working class whites (White Supremacists or Christian Nationalists) and conservative minorities (”self-identifying” as White Supremacists and/or Christian Nationalists). The external proletariat is obviously Russia. China won’t do because the ruling class makes all their junk there.
One simple reason.
Western leaders are afraid of being called nasty names in the government and the media. They know that the process, the one that they helped create, will break them should they attempt to disprove the slanders.
