Japan’s military requested a record defense budget for 2023 Wednesday following several moves designed to improve its defenses against a rising threat from China.
The 5.6 trillion yen request, equivalent to roughly $40.4 billion, could grow to as much as 6.5 trillion yen once procurement costs for some weapons can be defined after the government adopts a new national security strategy in December, The Associated Press reported. Concerns over China’s military buildup has accelerated Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s drive to expand Japan’s military over the next five years and deepen security cooperation with the U.S., Israel and neighbors in the Asia-Pacific.
“China continues to threaten to use force to unilaterally change the status quo and is deepening its alliance with Russia,” the ministry said in its budget request, according to Reuters.
Kishida has advocated to double the Japanese military’s defense spending from 1% of the country’s GDP to 2%, roughly 10 trillion yen or $72 billion, paralleling NATO’s spending quota, The Wall Street Journal reported in April. That could make Japan’s military the world’s third largest behind the U.S. and China.

It’s understandable that Japan would be very frightened of China...but they must also know that they wouldn’t have a prayer in an all out war.
Japan has the largest stockpile of plutonium on earth. If they decided to go nuclear today they’d have a dozen deliverable warheads by next Friday. The Hello Kitty version would be available the following Friday.

You do not want Japan pissed off at you.
They are a bit of assembly time away from being a nuclear armed country and the ChiComs know it.
They’re activating the Godzilla option.
The Japanese Home Defense Force has an excellent Navy. It’s not only size that matters, the equipment must work. I am sure their equipment is top-notch.
Knock, and Hello Kitty will open up on you.
Japan may already have a stockpile of nukes in secret.
Gaijins will not be informed with a memo.
Agree.
It’s 2022.
I’d much rather have the Japs on my side, than on the other side.
“It’s understandable that Japan would be very frightened of China...but they must also know that they wouldn’t have a prayer in an all out war.”
You are assuming Japan would be alone in a war with China. Even at that, Japan could deal devastating blows against China. Japan can have nukes within days — if not hours — if it decided to.
Also, remember that China has not won — much less fought —a real mechanized war in...well, forever.
Japan was shooting at my Dad in WWII. I much prefer them as an ally, especially with them feeling their homeland is at risk. They can be both ingenious and ruthless. Our government has forgotten how to be ruthless, unless dealing with our own citizens over political power.
A very big problem is that China has likely compromised many of our leaders, who will sell us out again in wartime when their skin is on the line.
I urge Japan to declare entry into the Nuclear Club. It’s in their best interest.
(cough) Japan’s “self defense” force, not military...they can’t have a military.
No need for nukes. Think outside the box. Japan should build a smart bomb to chemically remove the estrogen from the few marriage aged women China has.
I’m just glad their on our side this time. Would not want to fight them again. Professional smart fighters with a hint of crazy that should sow fear in any opponent.
if they don’t have the components already lined up and ready to assemble already suspect they could within a day or two.
If the expansion of Japan’s military is going to occur over the next five years, they might be four and a half years too late.
