It wasn't a matter of "if," but "when" and "how" big tech would target Donald Trump's social media platform, Truth Social.
Truth Social was recently barred from the Google Play Store, which is a digital distribution service for applications meant for Android phones.
Currently, there are more than 130 million Android smartphone users in the United States.
Axios reported the following statement from Alphabet, which owns Google.
On Aug. 19, we notified Truth Social of several violations of standard policies in their current app submission and reiterated that having effective systems for moderating user-generated content is a condition of our terms of service for any app to go live on Google Play.
Trump Media and Technology Group CEO Devin Nunes said the decision on whether the app would be available was "up to the Google Play Store." Nunes had previously called Google a "monopoly."
Google reiterated that Truth Social's violations, and the steps to redress them, have been clearly communicated with the company.
Trump Media pushed back, saying Truth Social was creating a "vibrant, family-friendly environment."
Google says it is up to Truth Social to comply with its rules.
The dispute continues.
Truth Social was founded as a free speech platform, following the coordinated social media ban on President Trump following the occurrences of January 6.
Upon its launch, Truth Social became the most downloaded application on the Apple Store.

They should have built Truth Social to be usable by anyone with a browser. Maybe Trump should have hired someone with a background ninIT rather then farming to run it.
It used to be that I could buy a computer and it would be up to me what applications I installed - the only limitation was that the application would be written for the OS I was running. With the iPhone, Apple popularized the concept of controlling hardware which I buy from them, deciding what OS and what applications I can run on my computer - my personal property - and Google is following that model as well. And we just accept it.
It is usable with a browser. I never could get an app.
They did.
I have repeatedly tried to sign up for Truth Social. Truth says it sent me a verification email and to click on email to sign up. I haven’t received verification email and I have checked my spam folder. I give up trying to sign up.
To be or not to be, that is the question.
Regarding the Truth Social the question becomes is or not is.
January 20, 2025 and Trump 47 better make it a priority to bust up the tech monopolies. Trump failed to do that last time and they will destroy him if he does not get it done this time.
Google is too big. It needs to be broken up into so many pieces they can’t count them all. Or, they need to be regulated within an inch of their life.
The left is gearing up for the election. They’re used to controlling the minds of the public and hate it when someone allows free speech and thought.
Total control is the ultimate goal.
Can’t sideload it on Android yet, either...
Weird form of fascism we have. Where corporate tells government what to do, and government tells corporate who to censor and disappear.
Illegal as heck, but it is what it is.
Truth sounds like hate to those who hate truth.
Geez. Do these simple social media sites require an app? Why not just go to an internet site?
With an app the host can probably track what you do better.
Big tech is in the business of controlled speech and thinking with the help of the left keep them stupid and you can keep your agenda.
It’s why free speech and thinking is suppressed so much and a reason to go after Trump and those who trust him.
Meh.
“They” said, if you don’t like Twitter or Fakebook go someplace else, make your own social media platform...Now “They” are trying to stop our social media platform..imagine that.
It is usable in a browser.
This is just to get folks to dig in. Truth Social is the biggest gift to the left and the elections they could ask for. The right too. Infact it scares republicans, conservatives and libertarians, essentially all but Ultra-Maga.
