New York City authorities are posting new signs declaring the iconic Times Square a "Gun Free Zone."
This comes ahead of a new state law that takes effect on Thursday, which declares several places off limits for guns.
Parks, churches and theaters have also been deemed "sensitive" places.
The measure passed following a June Supreme Court decision in NYSRPA v. Bruen that expanded gun rights.
It also sets strict standards for issuing concealed carry concealed carry permits.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul explained Friday that legislators acted quickly on the high court's ruling because it had "destroyed the ability for a governor to be able to protect her citizens from people who carry concealed weapons anywhere they choose."
"A week ago, the Supreme Court issued a reckless decision removing century-old limitations on who is allowed to carry concealed weapons in our state — senselessly sending us backward and putting the safety of our residents in jeopardy," Hochul said in a July statement. "Today, we are taking swift and bold action to protect New Yorkers. After a close review of the NYSRPA vs. Bruen decision and extensive discussions with constitutional and policy experts, advocates, and legislative partners, I am proud to sign this landmark legislative package that will strengthen our gun laws and bolster restrictions on concealed carry weapons."
Hochul pledged to combat the gun violence epidemic.

Only time will tell if you’re right.
This will certainly face litigation, and it will be interesting to see how brazenly the district and appellate courts try to undermine SCOTUS on this.
The standard now is “strict scrutiny”, so they’re going to have to get creative.
The standard now is “strict scrutiny”, so they’re going to have to get creative.
No, even "strict scrutiny" was blown out of the water by Justice Thomas in his Bruen opinion. The standard is only "history and tradition," so it will be up to the courts to decide if there is a "history and tradition" of banning concealed carry in vast swaths of a city like Times Square, and if there is a "history and tradition" of banning concealed carry in businesses of public accommodation without that business' explicit permission.
When a crazy criminal shoots an innocent citizen in Times Square will the media take note that it happened in a “gun free “ zone?
Hmm...going to have to learn more about that decision then. I remember one of the “lawTube” guys referring to strict scrutiny in this context, but that’s clearly not dispositive.
In any case, it’ll be interesting to see how the lower courts deal with these upcoming cases.
You know the answer to that even before you asked it.
All of Manhattan has been a gun-free zone since 1911 and the media never took note of that fact. Why would they start now?
But the first time a tourist is busted with a concealed firearm and an out-of-state permit, you can count on the media noting THAT.

It's deja vu again: A Wisconsin woman visiting the 9/11 Memorial yesterday was arrested after a security guard screening her bag spotted a gun in the purse.Ursula Jerry, 41, had a .380-caliber semi-automatic Kel-Tec gun in her purse. The Wall Street Journal reports, "The weapon had two rounds in the magazine-none were in the chamber, the official said." Jerry also told cops, "I travel with this from home on Amtrak to New York City. I don’t mean harm to anyone."
Jerry has a permit for the gun in Wisconsin, but not NYC. Responsible gun owners would know that New York City is really horrible and requires a NYC gun permit, which means out-of-towners are out of luck.
(As an aside: Only two rounds?!?)
Please do read it. It's written in plain language, and Justice Thomas has written a masterpiece. (Actual opinion begins on pdf page 7.)
Those are not the people that the citizens need protection from.
Hochul pledged to combat the gun violence epidemic.
No, she isn't doing that at all.
Will she put a sign like that on her house? Nupe.
