There simply isn't any defense against smaller drones except masers, and with those the problem is search and targeting, as use of radar for purposes those makes the emitter a target for artillery strikes. The emitter vehicle and the maser vehicle have to shoot & scoot fast.

Yes, it’s about Ukraine entering NATO. However, the reason why EU and NATO membership matter so much is because these institutions provide the political, economic, physical security assurances, as well as access to markets your global corporations seek. You have harmonization of policies and some local turd of a leader can’t just decide to nationalize your stuff, play games with the currency, etc. EU (economic, political) and NATO (physical security, political) membership are like an insurance policy for the huge global corporations and financial institutions.
So yes, behind NATO, and behind the politicians, you have hard cold economics driving the decision making process and because the oligarchs in the US and EU agree on this, there is no dissent, not politically or in the media. It’s a one sided argument because all the Western economic interests agree on this one.

One of the tricks the NVA used in Vietnam was to have every soldier lie on his back and fire straight up into the air during aerial attacks by the US. It did bring down aircraft from time to time.
