NBC considers cutting back programming hours in prime time
Fox Business ^ | August 26, 2022 | Joe Flint

NBC is considering reducing the number of hours it programs in prime time, people familiar with the matter said, a cost-cutting move that would reflect broadcast television’s diminishing popularity.

Under the scenario being discussed, NBC would stop programming the 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. hour and give those seven hours per week to local TV stations to program, the people said.

The talks are preliminary and it is possible that NBC will decide to continue to program the 10 p.m. hour, one of the people said. NBC hasn’t officially discussed the matter with its affiliate board, a group that represents station partners, two people close to that organization said. The earliest such a shift could take place would be the fall of 2023.

If NBC did drop the hour, it would have to decide which shows in its lineup would get cut. The network currently airs mostly scripted dramas in the 10 p.m. hour. Those could be moved to earlier in the evening to replace other content.

The last network program I watched as a must-see was 24. Other than that one program, I haven’t watched network shows in decades.

I do, however, watch Johnny Carson every night on Antenna TV.

Have not watched a network series or news show in at least fifteen years.

Kind of strange - more people are cutting the cord and getting antennas, yet broadcast TV is “waning in popularity.”

Or perhaps it is that the garbage NBC (and other Big 3 networks) is airing is waning in popularity. I am actually watching mostly the subchannels during those times myself.

More dancing shows! That’s what we need, and maybe some more amateurs singing and caterwauling. Maybe a rap shoe too.

I will say though it’s still fun to watch those late 60s early 70s programs where the networks would preview their new fall shows.

That’s not an Indian... you’re looking at either a ‘Guardian’ or a ‘Commander’. Not sure which.

That’s OK, but they better not cut Drag Queen Story Hour or the pedo tranny fashion shows.

Hi.

Don’t know.

Maybe I don’t like to be indoctrinated, preached to or told that I’m a facist deplorable (?).

Is it my imagination that there are more African Americans in ALL the commercials than ever before?

You have to advertise to the populace you are trying to get
to purchase your products. The black population is estimated
to be 13.4% of the population.

I cut the cable on May 1st. However, I still have Netflix, OAN, Newsmax, YouTube, Spotify and FoxNation. My wife signed up for FoxNation last Oct. We will let it expire this Oct.
Spotify my daughter pays for. We pay for Netflix. Thinking about cutting Newsmax too. They have turned into Faux Lite.

I was thinking of buying a digital antenna just so I could watch Patriots games this fall. Football is the only thing I was still watching on broadcast TV.

The last show I watched on regular TV was The Big Bang Theory.
Even that jumped the shark the last season or two.

” They can’t produce a TV show of the quality that HBO, Netflix, or even Amazon is doing.”

Broadcast tv is all about mass production. They crank out dozens of pilots a year, and then just cancel those that don’t catch on. So with that strategy in mind, it just doesn’t make sense for them to invest a lot in a show until it amasses an audience and they decide to extend it. Then you might see higher production values in seasons 2, 3, etc.

So with that strategy in mind, it just doesn’t make sense for them to invest a lot in a show until it amasses an audience and they decide to extend it.

NBC actually pissed off a lot of people when they abruptly cancelled "Manifest" after 3 seasons in the middle of a cliffhanger.

People had invested time in the show. Now a lot of people aren't even going to bother watching anything until there's a few seasons already in the can which is going to hurt a lot of shows that might've been great but nobody wanted to invest time in.

And it's not just the networks. HBO cancelled "Raised by Wolves" after only two seasons with no conclusion. They're so worried about short-term bottom lines, they don't give a show a chance to build a fan base.

Fortunately for "Manifest" fans, Netflix has bought the show for a fourth and final season to wrap it up. This only happened due to an aggressive letter-writing campaign. And I'll bet the final season produced by Netflix is leaps and bounds of a much higher quality than the previous three seasons aired by NBC.

Yes and just the volume that Netflix alone is creating puts networks on the back burner. Just too many series and shows to choose from.
