While European nations are struggling to prepare for a cold winter with natural gas supplies choked off by Vladimir Putin’s Russia, reports have begun to trickle in that Gazprom, Russia’s state-owned gas company, is burning off massive amounts of natural gas daily.
The BBC has reported the natural gas plant of Portovaya, near the Finnish border with Russia, is burning off an estimated $10 million worth of gas each day. According to the report, experts say that gas previously would have been exported to Europe.
Miguel Berger, Germany’s ambassador to the UK, told BBC News that the European Union’s efforts to cut back on imports of Russian gas were “having a strong effect on the Russian economy”.
“They don’t have other places where they can sell their gas, so they have to burn it,” he suggested, casting a rather optimistic image of the situation.

The bricklayer in Sudan sees the world as hard toil in the baking sun for not much money. The stockbroker commutes on a filthy train to a well-appointed office with a view of blue sky and white buildings. Those silly global leaders see dangers proven by history and, for good or ill, depending on who you are, they take the routes they believe will be best for them and their people, same as the bricklayer or stockbroker. It’s all a matter of perspective.
Leaders are supposed to look out for the welfare of their people. These days they only seek to aggrandize themselves & their ‘legacy.’

Characteristic of what Putin is doing with Russia’s wealth, economy and the standard of living for Russians. Burning it all.
If Russia’s customers don’t come back in the next few months, the wells will need to be capped, and the bulk of their gas infrastructure will fall into disrepair. Without the Western major oil companies technology, they are unlikely to restore it.
These are the death throes of the Russian natural gas industry. 20% of their former GDP could be gone next year.

Most oil and gas facilities will have a ‘flaring’ system of pressure control. It’s a constant flame used to bleed off excess natural gas that is impractical to store.
Chances are that facility has been doing it for years but the hyperventilating press just noticed it!
