KYIV, Ukraine — Mykhail Podolyak barely flinched as air raid sirens wailed in Kyiv, signaling incoming Russian missiles.
Sitting in his office at the heavily fortified presidential administration building in Ukraine’s capital, the adviser to the head of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the sirens have become a normal part of life six months into the war with Russia.
“We’re getting used to this new lifestyle — we are used to the wailing sirens now and to the bombardments, because the Russian Federation is mostly aiming at the civilian population and civilian infrastructure,” he said in an interview with The Hill, through a translator.
The interview took place on Wednesday, which also marked Ukraine’s Independence Day, the anniversary of its sovereignty after the fall of the Soviet Union 31 years ago.

General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has instigated a new strategy in the never ending process of trying to find something that will work against the Russians.
Since they don’t have the ability/manpower/weapons to stage an all our counter offensive as they had been promising for months and since Zelensky will not let General Z retreat back to a defensible line...the new strategy is to attempt mini counter offenses all along the front line and see if they can find weak spots to allow them to push Russians back. So far they have failed in each attempt and suffered large casualties except for one settlement near Severesk that Russia has removed most forces from. But, with each defeat they redeploy additional forces to that front to replace their losses.
Russia has responded to this new strategy by no longer attempting to gain territory right now. They are maintaining their positions at a safe distance that reduced their casualty risk to almost none and waiting for each new redeployment of additional Ukraine forces to replace the huge number that Russia had “terminated” in the mini counter offensive. When they arrive, Russia terminates them. Wash, rinse, repeat.

The French medic who went to Ukraine to help the Ukrainians was shocked at all the war crimes he personally saw the Ukrainians commit. He is personally putting himself in danger by reporting this. He even covers the shelling at Bucca and indicates it came from the Ukrainians.

– I went to Ukraine just to deliver humanitarian aid to refugees. In the past I was a nurse, I have certain knowledge. I have friends, former military doctors, they went to Ukraine to help the wounded and refugees. They called me: “Come, help us.” I refused three times, because I am the father of the family, I have major health problems. As a result, I met one of them in Paris, who had just returned from Ukraine. He explained what he was doing, showed videos of women and children who needed help. I decided to go to the Ukraine for a week to see what was happening there for the first time.
– When did it happen?
– My first trip took place at the end of March. The second is in April. All European packages with medicines arrive at the Polish-Ukrainian border, where I took medicines and medical equipment. We cross the border and from there we travel to towns and villages, where we distribute medical aid to the population. Our main point was located in Lvov, and we served the areas between Lvov and Kyiv.
“BOXES WITH PSYCHOTROPES ONLY STEAL”
– Were you the only foreigner in this humanitarian mission?
– No, there were a lot of foreigners: Italians, Canadians, Americans, people from all over the world. Unfortunately, too many volunteers did not have the necessary knowledge and skills. Many were not enough for a long time, so we traveled in a convoy of 3-5 people.
– Did you have a bodyguard with you?
– Not at first. Then, the Ukrainian military with whom we met asked for medical equipment and medicines intended for the civilian population in exchange for security.
Didn’t they have their own supplies?
– No. Every second soldier did not have a bulletproof vest, every third Ukrainian actually had an ordinary hunting rifle in his hands. They had no first aid kit. At the same time, we have repeatedly told them that these drugs are intended for civilians or orphanages. But at some point, some fighters from Azov made it clear to us that if we want to move safely within the framework of humanitarian convoys, then they should use our help.
– It has been repeatedly reported that drug addiction and addiction to psychotropic substances are widespread in the Ukrainian armed forces. Have you experienced this?
– I was one of the few specialist doctors who received such drugs at the Polish-Ukrainian border, where there was no control even by the Polish police. We receive dozens of packets of morphine, codeine… drugs that have a strong analgesic effect. Entire boxes worth tens of thousands of euros were even stolen, including by some volunteers, for resale on the black market. I distributed a large amount of morphine to the Ukrainian military, in particular, to the Azov fighters.

– Have you met foreigners who took up arms and went to fight on the side of Ukraine?
– Yes, and a lot. I saw a lot of young French people, guys between 18 and 20 years old, who fled from the Ukraine. They were psychologically depressed, they saw dead, although before they thought that this war was like a computer game Call of Duty. One must be psychologically prepared not only to see death, but also to be able to kill. There was always a small tent on the border between Poland and Ukraine, where there was a person waiting for those volunteers.
– Who coordinated your move in Ukraine?
– We had contacts with ambulance stations that needed the delivery of medicines. In particular, the coordinators were the “Azovs”, who ensured our safety on the way.
“HE WAS EXECUTED FOR BEING AN OFFICER”
– How did you end up in Bucha?
– It was planned that we would take the drugs to the suburb of Buchi, but at the same time we could not get there. Then the “Azovites” said: “We will help, but for that we will remove medical equipment and medicines.” It was the only chance. I ended up in Bucha in the first days of April, at which time it was again under the control of the Ukrainians for several days. In Bucha, I actually saw dead bodies on the sides of the road. We drove through the city non-stop, but I noticed how the bodies were taken out of the minivans and sometimes kept in small groups. And as soon as several corpses formed a hill, journalists suddenly appeared and filmed it. At that time, I began to understand that it was the effect of the extras. I discussed this with other volunteers who were in Bucha a couple of days before me. They said that some corpses were brought from refrigerators, even from other cities, so that there would be as many as possible in Bucha.
– You did not ask the question, why are these people not buried?
– When I was in the car, the “Azov” said: “Look at these corpses, look at what the Russian dogs have done.” But he surprised me that some of the corpses had their hands tied with snow-white cloth. The weather was very bad at that time. These corpses lay on the side of the road for 1-2-3 days and at the same time had clean bandages. This means that their hands were tied later, for the staging. I started to tell myself that something strange was going on in Bucha. But we did not stop in the city, we went to some hangar in the suburbs so that the people of Azov could unload the medicines. And at that moment a car with Russian prisoners of war arrived. Some were shot in the legs. At the same moment, the Ukrainian army asked us to leave the hangar. When I was already getting into the car, I saw how one of the “Azovites” shot a bullet in the head of a Russian prisoner, who, a few seconds before, replied that he was an officer.
– So you asked about the fate of those prisoners?
– The situation was very tense. I had a volunteer drive the car with me. And 4 hours on the way to the border 6 sobbed. The next day he returned to his homeland.
“IN MARIUPOL YOU FEEL DEATH EVERYWHERE”
– Returning to France, for some you became a hero who opened people’s eyes, for others – a Kremlin troll. He has been reproached for not providing any proof of his claims.
– The materials that I filmed, I handed over to the investigating authorities. I did not post photos and videos for a reason – they show the faces of Azov fighters. I have already received death threats. On August 3, the trial begins in Moscow, and I can be one of the witnesses. I never filmed these murders live, it was impossible for me to take out my phone. I managed to take several photos and videos before and after these events. In total, I have about 150 photos and videos from Ukraine.
– Why did not you immediately go to help the residents of Donbass?
I didn’t go there because I didn’t want to. It was much more difficult for a Frenchman to get to Donbass than to Ukraine. In February, dozens of humanitarian organizations were on duty at the Polish-Ukrainian border to provide assistance to Ukrainians.

– In June, did you still have a chance to get to Donbass? What impression did Donetsk make on you?
– If I listened to the European media, then Donbass is a horror. Everyone is being watched, you can’t go outside, this is the real North Korea. Donetsk is a very beautiful, modern city, it reminded me of Spain. There is a normal life, there is no authoritarian regime that forces people to do something they tell us.
– You ended up in Donetsk when the active shelling began. Did you feel it yourself?
– I almost died in Donetsk on the second day. I was in the center of town, talking to a woman, and then I heard a hiss and a pop 50 meters from us. We try to run away, to find some kind of shelter, and then we hear the whistle again. We fell to the ground. And the projectile exploded less than 30 meters away.
– Have you been to Mariupol?
– I was not advised to go there, but since at that moment I almost died, I decided that I had nothing to lose. What I saw there was a horror movie. This is a city that is destroyed from start to finish, where the dead are everywhere. For me, the whole of Mariupol was surreal. In this city death is felt everywhere.
– Do you remember any of the conversations with the locals?
– From Mariupol I have no words, but a photo album, which I found in the ruins of the house. I kept it to myself so I would never forget what I experienced there. The story that struck me the most happened in Donetsk at a children’s hospital. I knew a 15-year-old boy who had three major surgeries. A few days before, he had been home with his father, and when they heard the arrival whistle, his father had the reflex to cover his son with himself. The boy explained without a single tear that his father covered him with herself and died. And now he has to live with this his whole life, a complete orphan. For me, his father is a true hero.
