There’s a Carbon Dioxide Shortage, and Food and Drink Makers are Scrambling
WSJ ^ | 26 August 2022 | Jesse Newman

U.S. food and beverage companies are racing to keep operations running during a nationwide shortage of carbon dioxide.

Companies including Tyson Foods and Kraft Heinz Co. have been searching for carbon dioxide as supply disruptions this summer exacerbated existing shortages, threatening production of goods from cold cuts to beer.

Carbon dioxide is widely used throughout food and beverage industries, including to stun animals before they are slaughtered and to chill and process meat. The gas puts the pop in soft drinks and the fizz in beer, and is turned into dry ice to keep food frozen.

Maintenance shutdowns at other industrial facilities that produce carbon dioxide are scheduled for September and October, Mr. Gottwald said, which will keep supplies tight in coming months.

Some regional carbon-dioxide suppliers say they have been fielding dozens of calls each week from food and beverage companies hunting for alternate supplies. Some of those companies included General Mills Inc. and Butterball LLC, according to one supplier.

“Without carbon dioxide there is no beer,” Mr. Cilurzo said.

Somebody could bottle FJB and AOC's hot air. I wouldn't use it.

Oh, the irony that carbon dioxide is a four-letter word for liberals. Heads up to homemade seltzer and soda fans. Could affect Thanksgiving turkeys. FJB's misery index gains another notch.

Carlsbad Beer in Poland has already shut over this problem.

Beer fans hardest hit.

So, they’re sucking CO2 from the atmosphere on one hand to “sequester” it, but on the other hand they’re “running out.”

🤔

As much as they have demonized Carbon Dioxide as a major pollutant, people must be scared to death of the stuff. I’m surprised anybody buys soda or beer anymore.

I am shocked they are allowed to ACTUALLY PUT CO2 IN BEVERAGES!!

I thought CO2 causes global warming or climate change or something.

But they are huge liberals and democrat donors so I guess they are allowed

I also suspect that if big tobacco had not been big republican donors, and had been democrat donors instead, we would all be hearing about the healthful benefits of “bathing your lungs in cleansing smoke”

At least locally this has been a problem since the start of the covid hoax. People that have things like Sodastreams that use the refillable tanks havent been able to get refilled and cartridges have been short.

Sounds like a plan to raise prices. I don’t recall this ever being a problem before. Suddenly everybody is shutting down for maintenance. I know the refineries used to do this all the time. Not sure why scheduled maintenance is suddenly a national issue.

shortages, threatening production of goods from cold cuts to beer.

So everyone wondered if something would trigger the Minutemen to grab their rifles and go out to fight the enemy. Shortage of cold cuts and beer? With college and professional football coming up? The shot heard round the world.

Reminds me of a great quote from Ronald Reagan (and I paraphrase)— Put liberals in charge of the Sahara Desert and it is only a matter of time before they run out of sand.

Guess what folks? Blasting with chilled carbon dioxide is one of the major forms of food preservation, used for frozen meals to seafood to meats, etc.

You can’t just up and install a new and different freezing system in a factory and start using it in a day or two.

And you know what this impacts? Food production and distribution! You got it, another shock to the nation’s food supply.

I just saw an article on this in one of the ACS publications they’re always stuffing in my mailbox.

Carlsbad Beer?

Maybe it would work out better if Carl gave us his good beer. Enough with the bad stuff.

So wtf has suddenly gone wrong with this part of the supply chain?

Can’t we do anything right at all anymore?

CO2 is what make the greenies go berserk and is accused of causing climate change and is the combustion product of nasty fossil fuels. Don’t exhale or you’ll become a polluter and tell your wife to forgo dinner unless she cooks on electricity. And turn off your BBQ.
