but there's no doubt they are plain ignorant of the facts surrounding the viability of electric vehicles.

I don't think they're so much unaware of the facts as they simply don't WANT to believe them. In their fantasy world physics is mutable if you just believe hard enough. And the goal - which is limiting the mobility of Americans and has NOTHING to do with saving the planet- is so important that lies are perfectly acceptable as a means to the totalitarian socialist end.
