After Six Months of War in Ukraine, Momentum Tilts Against Russia
WSJ ^ | 23-AUG-2022 | Marcus Walker

Posted on 08/23/2022 7:09:26 AM PDT by SpeedyInTexas

Six months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, signs are accumulating that the balance on the military and economic battlefields is slowly tilting the way of Kyiv and its Western backers. ... Some results of the war already seem settled. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attempt to rewrite the ending of the Cold War by restoring Moscow’s historic sphere of influence in Eastern Europe has failed. His war on Ukraine has instead united almost all of Europe against him, revivifying the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which is poised to add Sweden and Finland as new members.

IMHO, Russia thought a blitzkrieg to Kiev would work.

Yes, 40,000 troops were going to take a city of 3 million people in a "blitzkrieg".

Don’t worry, Biden and his Communist friends will jump in and find a way to save Putin.

This is now a war of logistics. The side that first runs out of weapons, food, or personnel looses. Both sides have long supply lines. As the lines and logistics shift, the momentum will also shift.

IOW, this is part of the back and forth of a logistical war.

Given the new technologies , almost all military doctrines and tactics need to be questioned and revised. Armored fighting vehicles and naval surface combatants are now largely obsolete. Some hard lessons were appreciated by some who carefully observed the Ukraine war and the Azerbagani-Armenian conflict. If history is a guide, very much doubt the current crop of battleship admirals and cavalry generals patrolling the halls of the Pentagon have taken notice.

“With this catastrophic invasion, he has shown the world, especially China, that Russia’s conventional military is not the juggernaut the world once feared.”

The big problem with you assessment is that it is demonstrably and irrefutably false.

Whoever takes on Goliath, and knocks him cold, will be *very* popular on the world stage.

Yes, that IS the usual way.

I'd say that the Western militaries have some doctrinal revisions to attend to.

No kidding! The Russians & their allies are apparently firing 60,000 artillery rounds all day, every day, without pause.

Analysts are tearing themselves away from abstruse models of SEAD ops. Instead they're wondering how the Russians got to fight this war with an infinite ammo cheat.

Have you seen Mariupol and other areas that Russia took?
Russia broke the Bucharest Memorandum, first.
Russia invaded Ukraine 8 years ago.
Ukraine, Finland Sweden and the others wouldn’twant to join NATO if Russia quit invading and threatening.
Ukraine was already told they wouldn’t be admitted.
Russia knew this.
You’ll have to ask Pedo Joe, Cameltoe and Blinken why they pushed the charade of Ukraine being admitted.

Yes, the world is getting sick of the neocon punks and bullies in Washington DC.

All those Russian speaking Ukrainians were supposed to welcome their "liberators".

Please explain what is “demonstrably and irrefutably false” regarding this Assessment. Would very much like to hear your reasoning.

Eagles - Obama did that back in 2014, when he backed the coup and destroyed Ukraine's sovereignty.

Fact, the Russia Army occupies a large section of Ukrainian Territory and nothing Ukraine has done is driving them out.

We have no idea what the ultimate goal was in the beginning or is now, any suggestion otherwise is speculation.

Try using your brain...if Russia wanted to annihilate Ukraine, it could.

Yeah: totally without consequences!

Not to mention that half of the ‘invading forces’ are ... russian-speaking Ukraineans.

They’ve been shelled for eight years, and they want to be free.

“Their goal is the war ending with a larger Russia and a demilitarized Ukraine” - False. Putin himself stated the goal of the war is “de-Ukrainization”, Ukraine ceasing to exist as a nation.

“which Ukraine agreed to when the USSR dissolved. It was a condition of independence, which is why they were so unprepared for this war” Also false, Ukraine never agreed to “demilitarization”, they only made an agreement to hand back the nukes to Russia.

“and why Russia reacted as it did to NATO membership.” Except there was no NATO membership, so this makes no sense either.

Swallowing Russian propaganda uncritically and then vomiting it back up is just making you look silly.

For eight years NATO/US has pumped weapons, training, fortifications into Ukraine while constantly moving west, provoking and anticipating the inevitable reaction. Russia has not moved east. Until now.

Ukraine has done nothing but lose territory methodically being dismantled without “shock and awe” indiscriminate carpet bombing. Something they are capable of doing. They have stated that longer range weapons furnished to them will result in the loss of more territory.

I got the east/west backwards obviously. An important distinction.
