“Dumbass. Get a nextcloud installation and own your own cloud”

Does nextcloud do auto backups of photos and files?

It keeps a folder(and subfolders) on your PC synced with a folder(and subfolders) on a web server, preferably using your own domain name and hosting. So you could have something like this,

Nextcloud
—— Documents
—— Pictures

and set up your camera import software to use that Pictures folder.

Or you could set up your standard premade folders as your sync. With Windows 7, it would look like this,

Documents and Settings
—— John
———— Documents
———— Pictures
———— Music
———— Videos

and so on but you’d likely want to have John as the top level folder.

John
—— Documents
—— Pictures
—— Music
—— Videos

Folders can be excluded as well. The folder/subfolders structure are matched. Since I don’t want to share everything in my home folder, I made a Nextcloud folder and just drag things there.

My sync client starts up with my OS and continually monitors my Nextcloud folder on the PC and the folder on the web server. Delete something on one and it deletes the other. Add something to one and it gets added to the other. Works in both directions.

Domain name, $15/yr
Hosting, $4/mth if you pay for three years at once.
Most hosting will have a one click installation for nextcloud and/or owncloud.
On all hosting, you can create email addresses. john@mydomain.com for instance. They have webmail software installed on the server. There will be smtp settings to set up an email client or various server apps.
