Yes they are. In fact they are the ones that started it!

Don’t even try to make the argument that is the cloud not the phone. Today they are really one and the same. To turn off iCloud is to make your phone nearly worthless.

Good to know about this alternative.

Thanks very interesting.

The one thing I love about google photos is that it scans videos and faces and shares them with the people it finds. This way I don’t have to share my photos any longer.

This is a huge game changer for me. Any chance NextCloud getting a feature like that?

I completely disagree with your stance.

What’s a little bit of freedom for the cost of safety, right?

This is a slippery slope. They are just starting with the one thing nearly everyone is 100% against. Once this gets to be the norm, soon it will be stuff like, who reported the FBI crimes to the Breitbart.

Once, many years ago, a woman I knew was sitting a bunch of small kids at her place, and texted me a photo of them running around naked acting like savages. She texted me, “This is what I have to deal with all day.”

I texted her back to PLEASE never send me naked pics of children again, I don’t want to be a sex offender, and I deleted the pic. She immediately realized what she’d done and apologized.

I hit the Get Nextcloud download button and opened it. Too complicated!

Personally, I wouldn't want something like a facial recognition feature.

Probably not. That's a facebook/google/government desired feature and they aren't necessarily going to use facial recognition for pure purposes.

There's a bunch of Jan 6th political prisoners sitting in a DC jail that got their identities discovered via facial recognition.

My point is never put naked pics on the internet. You never know who will see those pics.

Anyone who isn’t already aware they are being snooped on is naïve.

Didn’t apple implement backdoor searches of photos ON YOUR DEVICE? I seem to recall people being upset about it about a year ago. They backed off it and then quietly released in an upsate of iOS. That seems a lot like searching your device.

They are photos of your child. I have naked photos of me as a child that my parent took...so what. I don’t care if they are on the internet.

Now if they were me as a teenager that’s another story. BTW: The photos of me as a child...was when I was a baby up to potty trained. I think it’s typical for this to occur.

That’s what I call Facebook “jail”. It’s not a jail...it’s a gulag. FB sends conservatives there all the time to “reform them” from posting stuff FB doesn’t want other people to see.

Like you, I tried to use the Pine Phone (linux) but the software still remains too beta for daily use. I did nlt go back to iOS when they implemented on device scanning of photos or whatever else they want. I bought a pixel and installed GrapheneOS, a google-free hardened version of android. Graphene makes it easy to install from a webpage, or from the command line if you want.

Backup to an external drive.

One that will hold all you will ever save in your lifetime will cost very little.

Encrypt it, set it up to backup daily and forget the cloud and google.

“What’s a little bit of freedom for the cost of safety, right?” - Don’t we already to this when get get screened at airports, stadiums etc? What if I called in a drunk driver swerving down the road (I have never done this)...should the police ignore me. What if it’s a suspicious person? Where do you draw the line?

Re: 42 - could not disagree more. I’m using an iPhone now that has no pics or videos that go to iCloud photos. iCloud Drive is used where appropriate, but not a requirement. Backups are not done using iCloud Backup but are local.
