The initial tsunami wave created by the eruption of the underwater Hunga Tonga Ha'apai volcano in Tonga in January 2022 reached 90 meters in height, around nine times taller than that from the highly destructive 2011 Japan tsunami, new research has found.
An international research team says the eruption should serve as a wake-up call for international groups looking to protect people from similar events in future, claiming that detection and monitoring systems for volcano-based tsunamis are '30 years behind' comparable tools used to detect earthquake-based events.
Dr. Mohammad Heidarzadeh, Secretary-General of the International Tsunami Commission and a senior lecturer in the University of Bath's Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, authored the research alongside colleagues based in Japan, New Zealand, the UK and Croatia.
By comparison, the largest tsunami waves due to earthquakes before the Tonga event were recorded following the Tōhoku earthquake near Japan in 2011 and the 1960 Chilean earthquake, reached 10 meters in initial height. Those were more destructive as they happened closer to land, with waves that were wider.

why didn’t that tonga tsunami generate some big waves onshore in asia and the americas or hawaii or alaska?
Generally..one to 3 vei 6s goes off every century. VEI 7s about one or two every 200 years.
8s? years and years.
But, those averages are not really consistent, two or more could go off one after the other-its up to mother nature.
BTW..as yo most likely know.
Tambora was a VEI 7.
Krakatoa was a 6-estimate.
Novarupta was a 6
Pinatubo was a 6.
It isnt really the size sometimes...its the duration more than the size.
There was one that went off at Iceland that killed more people than could be imagined. It was a 4 or 5. But it went on and on and on and on. Pumped massive amounts of gas into the air.
I will let someone else research that one.
If and when they have the knowledge to predict an eruption, warn people and let them live by their efforts, or let them die. Of course clean up, S & R afterwards. Now quit scaring people with the fact they are going to die. We all are, so leave us in peace.
“The year 536 AD is a candidate for the worst year in civilized history. There were crop failures, starvation, and disease. Some argue another Indonesian volcano played a major role in the catastrophe.”
The argument is basically the forefather of Krakatoa. Supposedly the Islands of Java and Sumatra were one island until then. The explosion was so loud it was heard clearly in northern China.
This vid offers evidence that volcano MAY have been Krakatoa:

Very interesting info. on this eruption: It will likely warm the planet, not cool it.

Basically, lots of water vapor was blasted high into the stratosphere, but relatively little ash and SO2 was.
