That is simplistic, to say the least. Of course they must abide all legal restrictions that the hiring nation is signed up to. Don’t be silly.
No “free” (i.e., non dictatorship) military, at least no modern military, requires its soldiers to obey orders that are illegal under its own laws — and, that includes foreign laws (e.g., Geneva convention). If an officer gives an illegal order you can disobey. You may be shot for disobedience by a corrupt gov’mt, but you have an obligation to “be legal”.
The idea of “I was just following orders” went out the window with the Nuremberg trials. That is why the Nazi’s spent so much effort at first making sure that when they murdered people in the camps it was in accordance with German law. So that anyone caught afterwards could go for the “I was just......”.
I suppose he is trying to appear to be noble. Does it ever occur to people that some who sign up to fight in conflicts that have nothing to do with them or their country, do so because it gives them an opportunity to kill? It’s the perfect cover for a serial killer who enjoys risk.
What a tool. I don’t like the Ukrainians, but the commander said to grab heaters out of the mall and they were taking them to a HQ location where that Legion is based.
That isn’t looting. Commandeering equipment and supplies for use of a unit isn’t looting. And that mall is not open for business. Sounds like a guy fighting a war met spoiled whiney American millennials larping as soldiers.

Curious- why would they be speaking Russian? The official language of Ukraine and it’s military is Ukrainian.
I was attached to a Saudi unit during Desert Storm. The LTC in charge of my team counseled us on what to expect due to the tribal and familial aspect of the border region at Khafji.
He said don’t be surprised if some Iraqi POWs are released while others were murdered, and to keep in mind there was nobody there to keep you from going into the shallow grave with the Iraqi if you insisted on reporting it.
I saw no violations of the Geneva and Hague Conventions during my deployment. My story and I’m sticking to it.
Notice the date on that graphic - 2003. Might as well be a B.C. date in Ukraine. Even in the farthest East portions, the use of the Russian language has decreased markedly as the “common language”. I’ve been in that green section (East-Center) - was in 2018). The anti-Russian sentiment, not just in language but anything specifically “Russian” was thick. Even greetings like “Hello” that sounded more like the Russian “privet” vs. the Ukrainian “pryvit” (yes - as tiny as the difference is) would often get dirty looks. Even in the South - there was massive distrust of Russians.
