“Almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so.” ― Robert A. Heinlein
Interesting reading would be to research “James Madison”, “John Leland”, “1778”
In 1788, Virginia had a convention re ratifying the Constitution. Baptists were opposed because it wasn’t strong regarding religious freedom. John Leland was leader of the Virginia Baptists and they were influential. Madison and Leland were candidates for the same position as Orange County delegate.
Madison was strongly for ratification of the Constitution., and he knew how influential Leland was, so in 1788 he went to “cut a deal” with Leland. If Leland supported Madison’s ideas, Madison would see that the Baptist Church was “the” church in the new USA.
Madison didn’t “get it”, i.e., that the Baptists were vehemently OPPOSED to ANY church being a state church and Leland explained why. Eventually, Leland won over Madison. Madison promised to introduce a religious freedom amendment to the Constitution, and Leland dropped out as candidate.
With Madison’s promise of religious freedom, Leland gave the support of the Virginia Baptists to Madison, who won the election, and then Virginia ratifying Constitution.
Baptists are responsible for freedom of religion in the Constitution.
