Gas-To-Oil Switch (EU Ahead of Schedule, Storing Gas for the Winter)

Now there's a growing sense that Europe might not only meet its gas targets but also exceed them...

Injections to Europe’s gas storage are running about nine weeks ahead of last year... European gas storage levels are above 70%, and have even surpassed the 5-year average.

By November 1st, the EU will likely hit 80% natural gas storage capacity (its goal) – in time for peak winter demand. Germany is even aiming for 95% capacity, and is already at 75%...

Indeed, analysts at Standard Chartered Plc are saying that President Vladimir Putin’s gas weapon will be effectively blunted by the inventory build, with Europe set to go through winter “comfortably” without Russian gas.

Coal use is way up in Europe and China, and enough gas is being found for Europe (even though they are paying a huge premium), that there is not the demand for oil that many had expected.

Oil prices had a big drop today, down below $87 per barrel for West Texas Intermediate Grade.

Losing European natural gas sales, and lower oil prices, is a double whammy for the Russian economy and Russian Government revenues.

“Oil prices had a big drop today, down below $87 per barrel for West Texas Intermediate Grade.”

Falling oil prices are a devastating sign for the economy, an economy that will see no growth in the next year.

EU (and Germany) solidly ahead of schedule (9 weeks ahead) for storing natural gas for this Winter.

They are now expected to get through the Winter fine, and already have enough stored to avoid worst-case scenarios. They ponied up and paid the premium, for non-Russian imports in a hurry, and got the job done.

Putin has used up the energy weapon card without success, and driven the Russian economy over a cliff in doing it.

He is a Master Strategist.

Rotterdam price for LNG is now about $70/million BTU, wholesale. This is about the amount of energy in about 7 gallons of crude. So $10/gallon, $420/barrel equivalent price for gas.

They’re hosed.

The guys at The Duran said that Qatar flipped Germany off within the last week about LNG supplies - AFTER Habeck bloviated about securing the supply from Qatar this spring.

Cold showers incoming.

“The guys at The Duran said that Qatar flipped Germany off within the last week about LNG supplies”

Yep, Germany wants Cutter to spend billions on expanding their terminal, so Cutter says “Fine, just sign this purchase contract for 20 (or 30) years”, so that they can get some return on that investment. Germany then says no, we only need your gas for 5 years (or whatever) until we’re fully ‘green’. Cutter tells them to stuff it.

Seems those Arabs know how to do business.

Also, as far as storage goes, Germany can store 2 months of average consumption...which likely means 1 month in the winter. If they don’t have a constant stream of gas coming in during the winter, they will simply run out (full tanks or not), which is why their storage situation isn’t as important as they want us to think.

“They’re hosed.” (the EU, because of Natural gas prices)

The article notes:

“Europe will have to pay a heavy price: the cost of replenishing natural gas stocks is estimated at over 50 billion euros ($51 billion), 10 times more than the historical average for filling up tanks ahead of winter.”

That $50 Billion Euros is just a fraction of what Europe is committed to paying for the war in the Ukraine. More than that is being spent on infrastructure buildout and long term supply contracts, so that all, or the great bulk of the Natural gas business is never going back to Russia.

Economic aid to the Ukraine is running about $6 Billion per month, and total Military aid (including the big US contributions) is a few Billion per month more. Reconstruction is going to cost many Hundreds of Billions of Euros, if not over a Trillion. There is also the cost to support millions of refugees, and well as an estimated 1.7% drag on EU GDP this year.

Bottom Line: They know it is pricey, but they can afford it, and they have signed the contract to buy it.

Russia is Hosed.

Putin did that.

In other news:

US LNG export facility Freeport LNG, which was knocked offline by an explosion and fire on 8 June, may be back online sooner than expected.

Freeport LNG, based in Texas, has reached a consent agreement with the US Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and exports could restart as soon as early October.

Not only that - Alexander M. also said that the talk about Germany stopping the scheduled nuclear power plant shutdowns is just that - talk:

https://youtu.be/3zbQ3BKt11c?t=1348

at 22:30 [Youtube link drops you in at that time]:
Well, there's been some talk, twittering about bringing back nuclear power, but I understand that Germany's pressing on with closing down its nuclear power stations despite suggestions that it might rethink that idea. So, essentially we're back to renewables, which in Germany means windmills. More windmills.

Putin's Green German footsoldiers are on the job.

“ Falling oil prices are a devastating sign for the economy….”

I remember waaay back when the bad orange man was POTUS we had low energy prices and the best economy of our lifetimes.

Falling energy prices are a strong deflationary force.

Your comment makes no sense.

““Europe will have to pay a heavy price: the cost of replenishing natural gas stocks is estimated at over 50 billion euros ($51 billion), 10 times more than the historical average for filling up tanks ahead of winter.””

The problem with the $50B is that the storage in Europe (at least Germany) is only enough for 1 MONTH, and winters there are longer than 1 month, much longer.

Europe is HOSED.

America-Lasters rejoice.

I like cheap domestic natural gas.

Why don't you, Beau-Beau? Why are you cheering on bailing the EuroTards out of the cleft stick of their own cutting, at OUR expense?

LOLOL!

Did the Germans fire Habeck and "Bareback", and get rid of Oaf Doltz?

Didn't think so.

Bündnis 90/Die Grünen will straighten this out for Das EcoPutinFührer right smartly.
