Changing party presence is not like changing kidneys.
In your scenario you give power to the GOP professionals and then Democrats change registration and still vote in the primary.
Congratulations. Your screwed even more efficiently.
Closing the primary does not stop that. Even in open primaries people have to choose a Democrat or Republican ballot. What does making someone choose a weeks earlier have to do with stopping that from happening?
Wanna double the chances of a patriot winning the seat?
Find and run MAGA red Donald Dem DINOs in ‘Rat races.
Until then we’re fighting half a battle.
I think a closed primary is a must but the GOP need to go a step further. If a voter registers as a rep they have to remain a rep until after the general. Same thing for a dem. Non of this jumping back & forth during the primaries and general.

None of this jumping back & forth during the primaries and general.
You should not be concerned about this. In the general election you can vote for a Dem, Rep, or independent whatever you are registered.
Its not my business to provide “help” to determined Dem trolls who demand open GOP primaries so they can vote for RINOS.
Its plain common sense that if you exclude far left Democrats from a GOP primary, you are going to get more conservatives electd.
If you can't see that, you are more screwed up than I thought.
How many races has Mitch screwed up for you?
Mitch?
Don't make me laugh.
How many Mitch backed candidates have won this year in head to heads with Trump backed candidates in this year's primaries so far?
Mitch has about as much influence in Republican primaries as a mouse.
How did Mitch do in the Arizona and Michigan primaries in the last 2 weeks when President Trump backed candidates won everything?
The problem with the GOP is not open primaries.
The open primaries are one of the biggest problame facing the GOP.
Its stupid to invite far left Democrats to come and vote in GOP primaries because they will vote for RINOS and leftists who can't win or who will vote with Dems if they win by mistake.
The problem is with the people running the GOP.
Most of the RINOS who used to run thr Republican Party in states have been removed.
My mother was abused by my step father when I was a kid
Too bad for you.
That is what the GOP is doing to their voters.
Nope.
The GOP conservative voting base has delivered a massive clobbering to the RINOS in this year's primaries.
The next target is RINO Liz Cheney who will get thoroughly beaten on Tuesday.
Sorry for you.
“””The next target is RINO Liz Cheney who will get thoroughly beaten on Tuesday.””””
And if by the slimmest of chance Liz Cheney gets more votes than Harriet Haggeman, it will only be because Wyoming is an OPEN PRIMARY state and the DEMOCRATS voted for Liz.
Frankly, I am surprised by the number of long time FReepers who do not understand how bad Open Primaries are.
Is FR infiltrated with trolls who have managed to get sign-on dates that are many years old?
Open primaries must be ended. They are ridiculous on their face. A political party is a club not a government entity. I know the Supreme Court oked open primaries but they were totally wrong in doing so.
They are a remnant of the days when Democrat/communists totally controlled states in the South and had “open” primaries specifically to ruin any chance the Republicans might have to win.
Great news... We needclosef primaries in ALL STATES.
I believe he mistyped his reply. I don’t believe he is a Democrat.
It is apparent that all you have to offer is insults. I have better things to do. God Bless.
For the same reason you have locks on your doors.
I guess those of us who aren’t registered Republican will just have to live with a bunch of milquetoast RINOs in the general. The whole system needs to be brought down. Voting, hah. The Founders were suspicious of democracy, G. Washington warned about parties in his Farewell Address, and stuff like this is why.
You phrased the question as if you didn’t understand the difference between open and closed primaries as in “why there would ever be a closed primary”.
Nope.
You could always register as a Republican and vote for conservatives in the primaries if you want to.
Not to mention most of the RINOS got clobbered in this year's GOP primaries, with Liz Cheney all set to get annihilated tomorrow too.
The racist Alabama Democratic party is the answer. Alabama was a one-party Democratic state that excluded blacks from meaningful participation. How? Only white people could belong to the Democratic party. They would a hold a closed primary, conducted and paid for by the State, among its members only, and select a candidate. This person would then be the only white candidate on the ballot and would win in the general election, where the few blacks who had managed to register, could vote, but would be shut out.
Part of the Civil Rights/Voting Rights acts and de-segregation court cases, required that primaries (and actually party membership) be open to all. Technically, if you vote in an a party primary, you are declaring that day you want to be a member of that party, and help select its candidates. I remember the voting documents used to actually say that.
In Alabama, you do not declare a party membership in advance of an election. In a “closed” system, you would have to declare a certain party a certain number of days in advance of the election, and there would be a registration book of just those declarers on election day. Its all historic accident, not design anymore. The USDOJ could stop to sue such a change under Voting Rights Act, but with States no longer needing DOJ pre-approval for election changes anymore, it would likely happen.
True, but if you voted GOP in the primary, you should only be able to vote GOP in the general. Same with the dems. But that won’t happen and it would probably be a bad thing anyway so never mind.
Estimates for the crossover votes in GA were 4% to 10%. Hardly negligible.
Is today Opposite Day?
