The Rhine Drought
Armstrong Economics ^ | Aug 11 22 | Martin Armstrong

The drought across Europe has caused substantial problems. In Germany, the Rhine has all but evaporated. Freights have been forced to reduce their loads across the river, but some are foregoing the route altogether. German authorities have not closed the river but are permitting shippers to cross at their own risk — and it is a risk many are not willing to take. Shipping vessels have been sailing half to a quarter full, according to Reuters, adding to the supply chain bottleneck. Numerous companies are shifting to railway transportation but that will take time. Around 80% of all goods transported to Germany via waterways come through the Rhine and this passageway is crucial for all of Europe. The last major drought occurred in 2018, prompting German authorities to close the passage for 132 days, which nearly triggered a financial crisis. The water was at a low of 27 cm in October 2018, and water levels are quickly rescinding. Authorities will try to deter another shipping halt, but there won’t be much they can do if the water levels continue to drop. Some estimate that the Rhine will be closed to ships as soon as Friday. The implications will be far worse than in 2018, as there was not a global supply chain shortage exacerbating inflation.

It seems “ Mother Nature” is heaping more “ troubles” upon Germany…..of course western MSM is not mentioning our own severe drought woes….

Of course, those of us that read and study the Bible can see clearly what is developing. 2023 promises to be very, very interesting.

Droughts are natural and may last a thousand years. I hope they don’t think it can be ended by limiting carbon emissions. They will waste a lot of money and be really disappointed.

The Rhine was down to a stream in the summer of ‘76.

That year was the Big Drought in the Western US too, when it didn’t snow until early January.

So tell us what the cause of THAT was, Ms. Thunberg...I was there. You could walk down the banks of the Rhine and out to the water’s edge about 50 yards in.

They can just put wheels on the boats and drive across.

Maybe it’s time to build a dam or two so they can maintain the water levels?

We’ve been getting regular rain on the East Coast. I was looking forward to the grass going dormant so I wouldn’t have to mow. Not happening.

“Recent years when La Niña Modoki events occurred include 1973–1974, 1975–1976”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Ni%C3%B1a

“Precipitation-wise normal to wetter conditions will prevail over far northern Europe under the low-pressure zone. But the rest of the continent is expected to be drier than average, except for the western Mediterranean.”

https://www.severe-weather.eu/long-range-2/enso-weather-la-nina-update-cold-season-influence-usa-europe-fa/

This is a La Nina year. Just like 1975-1976. This is natural.

Logically we expect to see the rain move to the Western Pacific. So let’s look in a news search to see what the weather is like in that area:

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/aug/12/nsw-primed-for-more-flooding-as-heavy-rain-expected-over-eastern-australia-this-weekend

https://www.foxnews.com/world/heavy-rain-continues-hit-japan-causing-flooding-evacuations-safety-concerns

So it looks a whole lot like a natural cycle. Sorry Greta.

I remember having a big drought around that time. The Mississippi barge traffic was heavily affected.
The river was so low that several paddle boats wrecks were found.
Also local swimming pools were half filled and felt like swimming in piss. Really put a crimping my social life.

Glad we did our Viking River Cruise out of the way a few years ago.

On the Danube, the Rhine and the Main from Budapest to Amsterdam.

If you go too early in the year, the rivers can be too high from the snow melt, so the ships can't pass under the bridges. And too late in the year the water levels are too low for passage.

In either case you get bussed around the problems.

Reference the drought map to see the severe drought areas, encroaching our bread basket, I have watched it since last year, “ blooming “ further and further
East and the Northern and Southern regions converging….looks like one of Vlads “ cauldrons “ before he took the Donbass.

Well, I do know Vlad got the water running from the Northern Canal the Ukies shut down.
Other rivers like the Belbeck are at highs…..

Kyiv’s Leverage Dwindles as the Crimean Water Crisis Comes to an End.

By Lance Bradley Posted September 27, 2021 In Eastern Europe, Opinion, Politics, Read
After a seven-year ongoing blockade of Crimea’s water supply, Ukraine’s tactic of hindering the Russian occupation of the peninsula is losing steam. Moscow has taken bold and expensive steps to counteract the problem while Kyiv has sat idly by, hoping that sabotaging the Russian occupation could be enough to regain control. Ukraine’s plan had potential, but the inability to maintain and increase pressure on the occupation made their plan unsustainable and eventually led to its failure...

That said, besides Russia having everything that the West needs, they have huge water supplies, the entire EU is of course experiencing increased drought while China and Russia are getting quite comfortable:

“...from Budapest to Amsterdam.”

You mean Rotterdam. The Rhine does not end in Amsterdam, I think.

Looks like God is going to pour out his wrath on Germany and the EU for the foreseeable future. Going to get mighty chilly I bet.

Yeah it’s pretty obviously the ENSO cycle just acting the way it always has.

There’s a few oddities like a dry mid-winter in California this year after a massive early winter snowfall, but then the whole West had a late season wet period especially in MT/Wy/CO.

But there’s always some new wrinkle. The Colorado river is lower then ever before but there seem to be other longer term factors related to that; winters in Colorado haven’t been unnaturally light recently.

….and a lot of EU “ leaders” I suspect will be seated in “ the smoking section” when they give up the ghost ( unless they radically change). It is never, ever to late to come to one’s senses.

Well, Viking thinks it does. And when we got off the ship we were in Amsterdam.

Notice the northern spur between Kinderdijk and Amsterdam. That is not the Rhine. I know because I made the trip several times as a crew member. You also passed under the famous bridge at Arnhem the so called “bridge too far”.
