Murder rate in major US cities outpaces Ukraine's recorded civilian death rate

Per capita murder rates in major U.S. cities such as Chicago, Baltimore and St. Louis are outpacing Ukraine's recorded civilian death rate from Russia's invasion.

According to the United Nations Human Rights office, 5,401 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia's attack began in February, although the agency said it "believes that the actual figures are considerably higher."

With a population of about 41,167,300, Ukraine's civilian death rate is 13.12 per 100,000 people using official statistics from the United Nations.

The murder rates for several major U.S. cities are considerably higher than Ukraine's civilian death rate.

For example, Baltimore, which has a population of 576,498 as of July 2021 according to Census estimates, has seen 215 homicides so far in 2022, yielding a rate of 37.3 murders per 100,000 people.

St. Louis, with a population of 293,310 as of July of last year, has seen 112 homicides in 2022, putting the murder rate at 38.2 per 100,000.

In Chicago, the 2022 murder rate is about 14.8 per 100,000.

CBS News compiled the latest available data earlier this year from the FBI's 2019 Crime in the United States report.

Using pre-pandemic data, 52 U.S. cities had worse homicide rates than Ukraine's civilian death rate. However, crime in the United States has skyrocketed since then, meaning that there may be more cities that qualify as deadlier than Ukraine under assault by Russian forces.

Unfair comparison of two different cultures.

One is teaming with violence and the other is Ukraine

I wonder too, just to crystallize the meaning of city murder rate versus city medical abortion murder rate?

This is BS. More civilians than that were killed in Mariupol alone. About 800 just in the theater strike alone.

I think the article is a little too tough on the administration. With more illegals coming to blue states the killing rate will be reduced.

Stupid, no one actually believes ruzZian reports on number of Ukrainian civilians killed.

"the Agency believes the rates are considerably higher".

I believe they are comparing individual cities to the entire population of Ukraine, not a city to city as in Chicago to Mariupol.

Did you even read the article at all before venting?
It's about murder rate, not total murders.

The murder rate for neighboring Washington, DC, is only slightly lower than for Baltimore, definitely over 30 per 100,000 in 2019 and heading even higher for 2022. The death rate in large counties around DC are also up. In racially mixed Prince Georges Co., MD, the 2021 rate was up 1/3rd from 2020. In affluent Montgomery Co., MD, the increase was more than 80% in 2021. Increases were also reported in northern Virginia counties. In fact, observing these 3 areas this year I have been shocked by the frequency of killings being reported. In fact, last night I was surprised by reports of killings just north of DuPont Circle, less than 100 yards from a specialty news store where I have bought hobby magazines.

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/dc-suburbs-end-2021-with-higher-homicide-counts/2923926/

In some areas deaths are caused by gang shoot-outs or spree killers/shooters. In others mental decline and family stress caused by Covid isolation appears to be a factor. In fact if you are feeling suicidal or homicidal, try to get help. Call a suicide prevention hot-line, attend an AA or NA meeting, talk to a local spirital/church leader. Take some supplements like Vitamin C and D, and calcium with magnesium (2 to 1 ratio) which can make your body feel better. Or try Valerian for calmness or Meletonin if lack of sleep is an issue. Get help for yourself or someone you know needs it!

The number of civilians killed in the Ukraine is what I am calling BS.

Start with an artificially low number, get an artificially low rate.

They say 5,000 civilians killed by Russian invaders in the Ukraine. I say B.S. they killed more civilians than that in Mariupol alone.

90% of the civilian residential housing stock of that city was destroyed or damaged by deliberate Russian Artillery fire. People were home.

More than 5,000 Ukrainian civilians have probably been killed just in FSB torture chambers so far in the Ukraine. There was a ditch full of about 400 bodies for the FSB operation in the Kiev suburb of Bucha alone, after only a few weeks - and they have those FSB operations everywhere they occupy.

So when US cities are being described as war zones, that would be an accurate description.

Are these cities getting over $60 billion in aid? Are celebs dropping in and visiting the politicians?
