A man is charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting into his own car after someone jumped inside it at a gas station.

On Aug. 9, Memphis Police (MPD) officers responded to a shooting at a Valero gas station in the 2800 block of S. Perkins just before 1 a.m.

According to an affidavit, a man identified as Kenneth Petty told them he left his 2018 Chevrolet Trax running while he went into the store.

He said he saw someone get into his car.

Petty was armed with a 9mm handgun, and fired the weapon as the suspect got into the vehicle, police said.

He told police he shot into the vehicle to prevent theft.

After being taken into custody, he told police he had a friend take the gun before officers arrived, according to the affidavit.

Police found 19 shell casings at the gas station.

A juvenile sustained gunshot wounds to the ear and shoulder during the incident, records show.

Petty was taken to 201 Poplar.

He’s charged with attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm, and tampering with/fabricating evidence.

I mean, it’s a Chevy Trax. He probably should have let the guy steal it... not because of some idiot reason like ‘no car is worth a life’ or anything like that but because those things are awful. Driving a Trax is a punishment in and of itself.

Good. The car thief deserved it.

Let the car owner go free.

Don't know all the facts here, but I can bet the perp was a feral typical, and I believe it will be soon that people will become vigilantes, because the "woke" police, courts, and elites allow lawlessness to go un-prosecuted, or un-punished, or both.

Expand the Castle Doctrine to INCLUDE all personal property, and allow people to handle their situations, as needed.

There is NO Justice anymore, and We The People will use common sense, and defend what we've earned, from those who live off other's earnings and sacrifices.

Well, that’s interesting. I’d like to hear a little more about that.

The attempted car jacker is lucky the car owner didn’t shoot the gas tank trying to stop the theft.
It would have been yet another Auto Inferno.

Other reports have the shooter as having *zero* prior convictions, so maybe not.

He’s charged with... “possession of a firearm”...

Illegal to possess a firearm in Memphis?

Amen.

Cars are deadly vehicles in the hands of fleeing criminals.

19 rounds and all he hit was the perp’s ear and shoulder?! Man, that guy needs more range time.

Zero priors is often cited where there’s a juvenile, or, more-likely, where the ambulance-chasers get involved to Plea Bargaining/Record Expungement, too.

Stupid. You leave your car running at a Memphis gas station in 2022, that’s on you. You are basically offering it up for free. You can’t tape a $100 bill to a bus stop bench, then shoot the first guy who grabs it. This poor idiot is going to prison. I’m not saying he was wrong, just that he is stupid.

No, I thought you were referring to the shooter as the perp. The shooter looks more than a little sketchy, but no priors.

That last was proven by the fact that he bought a Chevy Trax.

Friend of mine used to grab a handful of various caliber shell casings from the discard boxes at the range we used to use.
He'd take 6 or 7 45’s, couple 38’s and some 357mags-whatever he found-and throw them around some of the dicier neighborhoods intersections that he passed through on the his home.
I never heard if anything came of it but I think about that everytime there's a shooting in town and the police are all over the news putting those stuipid little tents over the spent cartridges.

On the other hand, it’s a modern GM product. Maybe he was afraid it wouldn’t restart if it shut off?
