Italian pizza is also very sparsely topped. It’s considered an appetizer, actually.
I've never been to Italy but I've heard Americans being disappointed with Italian pizza for the reasons you've just mentioned.
You are right. I remember ordering pizza near Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was low quality with very little toppings.
I spent four months in Milan and there is a big difference between American pizza and Italian pizza. When Italians serve your wafer thin pizza, they drizzle olive oil on top. The pies are 15” in diameter which seems too large for a single person but are not due to they’re not built like the Brady, fat Chicago style. The cheeses are very different from the processed crap we get here.
