Many in the US political sphere seem convinced that we are on the verge of an apocalyptic moment.
On the left, outlets like Jacobin like to point out that income inequality is at the highest it’s been since 1917 — the implication, of course, being that 1917 was the year when the Bolsheviks overthrew Nicholas’s Russia and founded the Soviet Union1. On both the left and right, outlets like the Vice2 and The Federalist3 wonder if the highly polarized political environment will boil over into a second civil war.
Both the left and right have their own narratives about what will lead to the conflict. Those on the socialist left who adhere to the theories of historical materialism believe we must be in the “late stage” of capitalism, and that the transition to socialism is inevitable. There are those on the right who think the culture war will eventually turn violent.
Both of these narratives are completely wrong. The risk of sustained, multi-year civil conflict with occupied territory and frontlines in the US, or any similar country, is nil.

We are too fat and lazy and yes the “war” is being fought online pretty much already or at thanksgiving dinner
Those who seriously wish for a real armed conflict need to understand our war would take down the world as we know it with us
Everyone depends on our economy and exports and imports and own our debt
A few nations could be self sufficient if as a last resort
Us and Russia come to mind first
And a few others Canada and Norway probably
and Brasil and Venezuela and Iran and Mexico if they change leadership
Most of that is energy based independence food production capabilities btw
Tough for Norway and Iran food wise likely but they are capable
Just for discussion
We are now VERY DIVIDED
I admit I did not see this leftist tsunami amongst post boomers going here it’s gone It’s snuck up on me
Highest denominator though is the demise of the white demographic here though immigration legal or otherwise and birth rates
No question of that though Trump did peel off a few
We warned of that here 20 years ago on deaf ears and who called us racists same as Bush inc did
He may be correct, but with the recent events...well....I wouldn’t bet the entire farm on it.
The sheeple will be sheepled. Most people simply don’t care.
Once we get organized and geared up, the Left has no chance. I think the basic point to keep in mind is have no fear EXCEPT in the Lord. We must pray constantly for victory over these demons of darkness.
The risk of sustained, multi-year civil conflict with occupied territory and frontlines in the US, or any similar country, is nil.

No, it won’t be a classic battlefield civil war. It will be what we’re seeing; the use of the legal system and institutions to destroy your political enemies. This will be followed by an escalation to targeted killings and terrorist attacks. A dictatorship is the classic outcome.
The article is a year old. A lot has happened since then.
Every event and every idea has its time.
Highly intelligent and perceptive folks like John Adams and John Calhoun were concerned about the possibility of Civil War in the 1820s—they were both long dead before it happened.
Imho it will happen—but many of us old timers will be gone before it does.
I pray that this authors analysis is correct, but my feeling based upon history is he got it wrong. It’s about 3% that make the decision. What triggers that 3% is completely unpredictable. The transgressions can go on for years, then something, something maybe not predicted or seen as a real threat, sets off things in a new and dangerous direction. Currently, more than 50% of Americans believe the following: 1. 2020 election was rigged 2. There is a strong chance of civil war 3. There is no way to reconcile the political differences 4. Government is unpopular and no longer listens to the will of the people. Does that mean the entire country will burn, and 8%+ of the US population is going to die like the last Civil War? I hope not, but there clearly is a problem. We currently have a sitting POTUS who has threatened to use F-15’s and Nuclear Weapons against Americans verbally. That kind of stuff never used to happen, and that kind of a threat means we may be much closer that the author realizes.
Even David Axelrod, as hardened a Democrat as you get, knows that the moves made against Trump with the raid is uncharted ground. Unless they have him on Murder cut and dried, it’s looks political and disgusting. The kindling is sitting in the forest now, what will start the fire and when is unknown.
Those who seriously wish for a real armed conflict need to understand our war would take down the world as we know it with us
Couple that with the fact that many seem to think this will be more like a ‘first person shooter game’ than war.
First, who is going to be fighting? Are Conservatives/Republicans going to go into liberal neighborhoods and ‘close with and destroy the enemy’? Nah...
Second, do people think that their lives will go on, as normal, while shots are being traded? “Hey Mike, I can be here Mon-Wed-Fri, from 3pm to 8pm. And on Saturday after 12, because my kid has a softball game.” They think they’ll carry on with all their day to day things, while there’s fighting in the street. Not gonna happen. Communications shut down. Power grid shut down. Financial system shut down. No more just deciding to go for pizza and a beer on Friday nights.
Third, what do all the folks that reflexively “Back the Blue” “Support Our Troops” do when the men and women in uniform come? Decisions, decisions. I proposed a scenario to a guy that said that they’d never get his guns. He’d go down swinging. I told him that all I’d do is surveillance, do a traffic stop on him, get him out of the car and place him in cuffs, take him back to his house, execute the search warrant and take everything he had. Either that or he has to shoot the cop and then be killed or go off to prison. He didn’t have an answer.
We don’t live in the same country we used to.
Demographics, culture, morality, respect for laws, endemic corruption, societal dysfunction, etc. have all fundamentally changed this once great country.
We’re not in Kansas anymore.
I pray to God that I live long enough to see these commie cretins wearing chains and breaking rocks in the hot sun. Or the Lord returns. Either way, I can’t wait.
This is our biggest problem - we need leadership.
I don’t recall throughout my 72 life seeing conservative organize and pull together. The sometimes bitter infighting here on FR should tell you something.
forgot to add.....
Will there be violence? Absolutely.
And it will only get worse and, probably, spread to areas that didn’t experience all that much. And much of that will be caused by the fact that Democrats/Liberals, the ones that have caused all these problems w/ help from all the RINOs/Globalists, will start moving out of the cities, if they can.
When they get to their new homes, they won’t be able to tolerate a small town, run by Conservative’s/Republican’s and will start interjecting themselves into everything, as they’ve done and continue to do all over the country, and ruining EVERYTHING they touch. It’s like they know no other way.
So, the violent crime will continue to go up. Some places, the cops will just leave and become lawless NoGo Zones like Baltimore did after the whole Freddy Gray thing and the cops either left BPD or just stopped doing their jobs in those areas.
what do all the folks that reflexively “Back the Blue” “Support Our Troops” do when the men and women in uniform come?
***********
They will be shocked when they see them doing the bidding of their paymasters because salaries, benefits, and careers are going to cause them to comply. Just following orders, don’t you know.
That is correct. This Nation now belongs to the young and to the invaders. They don’t want what we once had.
Ehh-Zackaly.....
Leadership to do what? With what objective?
“I don’t recall throughout my 72 life seeing conservative organize and pull together. The sometimes bitter infighting here on FR should tell you something.”
Agreed—imho that will never happen.
What will happen when things get bad enough (that means “average” folks are going hungry) is warlords/military dictatorships of regions.
The folks waving copies of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights around will be about as relevant as the horse and buggy on Interstate highways—they will always exist but only as quaint curiosities.
The question then is whether the current ideological divide in the United States might be moved to that sort of breakpoint by those with more of a stake in violence than in peace. It is increasingly geographic given its hardening urban/rural and bicoastal concentrations. Wealth inequity is, as the author suggests, essentially meaningless in a society where the poor are fat, but it can be and is being used to magnify other resentments. Sensationalist and partisan media most definitely can be used this way, as the Rwanda massacre shows - there it was only a handful of radio stations that whipped up and maintained a genocidal frenzy. I suspect that the author's model of civil war may be perfectly adequate for most cases but it's the corner cases that get you. Just my $0.02.
