A former Colorado police officer who did not stop another officer from being rough with a 73-year-old woman with dementia was sentenced Friday to 45 days in jail and three years of probation.

Daria Jalali earlier pleaded guilty in the arrest of Karen Garner in Loveland, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Denver, in 2020. She had faced up to 60 days in jail for failing to intervene, a crime created by lawmakers as part of a police reform bill passed during protests over racial injustice and police brutality in 2020.

I completely agree. I wore the uniform in the military and I saw a Jr. Officer (O-2) go on a power trip by bullying some my Jr. Sailors as the ranking NCO at the time I ordered him to stand down or I would put him down right there on the Flight Deck. Same thought applies here, she knew he crossed the line.

Apparently you’ve never dealt with a dementia patient. They do sneak out, I had to literally lock my mother in her house by putting a lock on the outside of her door to keep her in.

All these “blame the family” posters have no understanding or compassion for the person trying to deal with a dementia relative keeping in mind the possibility of elder abuse charges if you do restrain and if they get away when you don’t.
It’s an exhausting, frustrating, and emotionally draining situation.

They may be trying to divert the focus away from the dirty cops.

Exactly. I took care of my mother for six years and every day was a challenge to keep her safe, as mentioned, finally resorting to putting a hook and eye on the outside of her wooden screen door to keep her in. She would open her door and get frustrated with not being able to open the screen door and then she'd turn around and go in the kitchen and start banging on the kitchen window, luckily she lacked the strength to do any damage. There are so many stories of dementia patients escaping, wandering off and getting lost because they have no memory of where they are and where they're going because they're living in another time period, or worse, they're found dead.
