In Las Vegas, Nevada, it's come to this: climate change has helped make water ever more scarce, so under a new Nevada law, the grass has got to go. "When we look at outdoor water use in Southern Nevada, landscaping far and away is the largest water user, and of that, it's grass," said Bronson Mack of the Las Vegas Water Authority.
The city's already pulled up about four million square feet of grass on public property so far this year, because thirsty green parkways are something they just can't afford anymore. "The grass that you see behind me is not long for this world," Mack told correspondent Tracy Smith. "In fact, within the next couple of months to a year, this grass will be completely eliminated, and it'll be replaced with drip-irrigated trees and plants."
And every drip counts. So, water waste investigators (also known as water cops) patrol the neighborhoods, taking note of who's watering when, and how much of that water goes down the drain.
But it seems there are still those who could use convincing that climate change has become a climate emergency.
Last spring a group of scientists chained themselves to a Los Angeles bank in protest over the lack of action. "We're going to lose everything, and we're not joking," said one protester, Dr. Peter Kalmus. "We're not lying, we're not exaggerating. This is so bad, everyone."

Year ago, Tucson, AZ cut the grass that grows after the monsoons and after it dies, sprays green color on the dead grass.
So glad I fled Las Vegas decades ago - not because of the water shortage, Lake Meade was full to overflowing then, we left because of the out-of-control crime and gangs.

A neighbor of my cousin in San Diego did xeriscaping, and it looks good and requires near zero maintenance. Now that I’m approaching my dotage, that sounds pretty good to me, except I live in Virginia.
Las Vegas is in a desert, so the need to bring alpine meadows there borders on delusional thinking, close to the kind found in the desire to change one’s sex through chemical castration and mutilating surgery.

Back in the old days, doctors would tell people with severe allergies to move out to Arizona (or presumably Nevada) where there wasn’t much grass. Those days are over.
Is the narrative now back to global warming rather than climate change? As prochoice is to abortion, climate change is to global warming. When there was not enough evidence that the earth was indeed warming after the scandal of doctored weather numbers perpetuated by Professor Mann and the East Anglia weather cultists was uncovered, they switched to climate change to include extreme cold, hurricanes and herpes, all caused by extreme weather. What part of Las Vegas is a desert does CBS not understand? It’s not supposed to have grass or water until someone outside the desert sends them the stuff.

Las Vegas is located in a desert. The problem ISN'T climate change.
Nothing wrong with planting trees. Hopefully they'll choose drought resistant native varieties. Mesquite comes to mind and they're legumes which fix nitrogen into the ground. Add some Agarita, Purslane, Mallow, Prickly Pears, Torrie's Wolfberry and you've got yourself a little food forest in the desert.
Golf Courses = Tourist $$$.

I enjoyed going to Las Vegas in the 80s. You couldn’t pay me to go there now.
Golf courses are spared, along with other grass areas used for recreation. “Useless” aka “non-functional” grass in landscapes are subject to the water regulations.
Football fields
We took ours out in Reno a couple years ago. Used 9 yards of “DG” and 3 yards of river rocks for a creek bed. We did all the work and it came our pretty decent. Summer water went from $200+ to around $30.00. We still have some trees and bushes/shrubs. Gave away the lawn mower. 😎
