It’s been in use for a long time.
Is there an issue that has surfaced that reveals that top soil is being
rendered useless.
Crops themselves draw out nutrients from the ground. You either have
to rotate crops or use fertilize to replace.

Or don’t plant at all for a season.
Maybe home gardens will become more popular.
