French Scientist's Photo of ‘Distant Star’ Was Actually Chorizo

A photo tweeted by a famous French physicist supposedly of Proxima Centauri by the James Webb Space Telescope was actually a slice of chorizo.

Étienne Klein, research director at France’s Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission posted the photo last week, claiming it showed the closest star to the sun.

“This level of detail,” Klein wrote. “A new world is revealed day after day.” But a few days later, Klein revealed that the photo he tweeted was not the work of the world’s most powerful space telescope, as he had in fact tweeted a slice of chorizo sausage.

“According to contemporary cosmology, no object belonging to Spanish charcuterie exists anywhere but on Earth,” he said after apologising for tricking so many people.

I love chorizo and egg tacos. I just never knew they came from a galaxy far, far away.

the closest star to the sun.

Here's some useless trivia to give you an idea how big space is.

If you could shrink space down to where the sun was the size of a pea, Proxima Centauri, our closest stellar neighbor, would be about the size of a peppercorn.

And there'd be 117 miles between them.

The more chorizo I eat, the more I anticipate having to deal with the heat of the sun.

Or at least from the Proxima Centauri system.

Maybe he got the idea from Our Man in Havana, by Graham Greene. The main character photographs parts of a vacuum cleaner and passes them off as top secret information (it's been a long time since I read the book so I don't recall the exact details).

So it was Dr. Klein’s own idea to play this little caper. This won’t add much to his professional credibility. He must have been hugely bored to do this, not that it’s not amusing.

I’m going to have to look that book up. I don’t know much about Graham Greene.
I did hear that he had an unusual type of marriage. His daughter wrote a book about it.

Agreed. The photo is of Spanish chorizo. I prefer the Mexican. Give me mine with extra salivary glands and lymph nodes, please!

Even the size of our solar system can’t really be modeled accurately If the planets are sized so you can see them Pluto and Neptune are miles away.
