There is no operational reason for a carrier to EVER be in the strait. Political reasons only. Stupid ones. It’s a really, really stupid place to put a carrier, operationally. Militarily, the closest place it wants to be is hundreds of miles east of Taiwan.
I watch Laowy86 videos a former expat in China who was kicked out and now back to the US with his chinese wife and kids. He lived there for a decade and knows the country, also is not a friend of communists.
He said the people of Taiwan are almost universally against reunification with China. They want their independence.
Oddly enough he also said they are not massively preparing for defense. One would think they would set up a situation like the Swiss, make the cost of taking them too expensive. Hopefully that is changing as of recent events.
