Nuclear Power Plants Could Stay Open, Says Germany
WSJ ^ | 03-AUG-2022 | Bojan Pancevski

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said for the first time that his government could postpone the planned closure of its remaining nuclear reactors, as he criticized a decision by Russia to constrain gas flows to Germany—a move that could deal a severe blow to Europe’s largest economy.

Last month, Russia shut down for maintenance its giant Nord Stream pipeline, which connects Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea and is operated by Russian state-owned energy producer Gazprom PJSC.

But isn’t nuclear power evil? Can’t they just tell the elderly to wear coats and use more blankets?

Duh. Imagine, in the US, there is suddenly no DEF. Would the government allow long haul truckers to modify their trucks to run without it? I think so.

The left knows when they need to lose the small battle to keep from being utterly destroyed.

It’s becoming obvious to everyone paying attention - you go nuclear or your country collapses. It’s literally that binary.

Now that conservation and unicorn farts have been exhausted as sources of supply, the first inkling is starting to dawn on the Germans that just maybe they’re going to have to reduce their sacrifices to Gaia.

Not actively seeking to make the huge problem they have even worse is scant grounds to proclaim “progress” but such is the extent of their Gaia worship.

Nuclear is one solution. Coal is another obvious one. They have plenty of coal in Germany. They used it for decades to supply the vast majority of their electric power and its not like they were in any danger of running out of it.

I forgot about that.

FWIW, in my state of Kentucky, I always thought it would be funny if EV’s had stickers on them that said, “Powered by coal”.

Not just nuclear, but coal and natural gas as well.

Amazing how the threat of freezing your ass this winter can restore a bit of common sense.

I’m still hoping they freeze their asses - because they deserve and to make a more lasting impact on their idiocy.

Germany has an an abundance of brown coal...the ‘dirtier’ of coals. Russia was selling them black coal.

The issue here...all this solar and wind generated power led to a required ‘off-set’ system...something to make up for the limits. The pick, from probably two decades ago, was natural gas fed power plants. Once they quit fracking within Germany in 2016...this led to only one source (the Russians).

Whole thing would appear to be scripted, for almost thirty years...to lead them to a ‘perfect storm’.

These are not serious people. Yanking the “on/off” switch on power plants (coal, nuclear) is not something you do like deciding between sunside up or scrambled eggs for breakfast. Unfortunately, this describes the current state of affairs in this nation as well.

I keep saying, last Fall I saw a short German PSA video I really wish I’d bookmarked. It was basically telling you how to a avoid freezing to death in your apartment without the gas heat. It was crazy! Yet here we are.

Yeah, I wonder about them being ABLE to use coal again.

Didn’t they not only stop those coal-fired electric plants, but tear them down, too?

“They have plenty of coal in Germany.”

6th in reserves

8th in production

4th in consumption

Net importer

And their coal is low quality.
