Europe’s Coal-Buying Frenzy Means Windfall for Producers
WSJ ^ | 02-AUG-2022 | Jenny Carolina González

The people of this coal-mining hamlet say they grasp little about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But they do know it has translated into boom times for them.

In the wake of the war, Europe is weaning off Russian coal and turning to Colombia and a host of other countries from South Africa to Australia with an urgent appeal: Sell us more coal. A commodity that was fetching $134 a metric ton at the start of the year is now selling for up to $400 a ton, leading coal producers to try to crank up production and creating a windfall in towns like Tópaga, located in the mountains in the heart of this country.

They might as well sell it somewhere since all the US coal fired plants are being rapidly shut down.

Hmm. What country has by far the largest coal reserves on earth?

Its completely idiotic that we aren’t mining it as fast as we can and turning it into good money selling it abroad.

“all the US coal fired plants are being rapidly shut down”

Coal is very dirty. I’d prefer we sell coal to India and China and burn nat gas in USA.

Indian and Chinese cities bear the burden of the pollution in their cities.

And our miners stay employed by exporting coal.

Peabody is mining as much coal as it can ship. The major limiting factor is availability of rail transport. And availability of labor.

Did Europe run out of coal to mine sometime in the 20th century? Do they really think they're reducing carbon emissions by burning coal from South Africa instead of coal from the Ruhr Valley?

Not that simple. Some coal burns much cleaner the others. When it comes to Power Plants, Nat Gas is much, much harder to store than coal. If the climate a-holes weren’t calling the shots the solution would be a combo of Gas/Coal/Nukes and there would be plenty of energy for the foreseeable future.

Coal is NOT dirty. I live ten miles from one built in 1990. I have lived here since 1992. It WAS no problem. The enviros shut it down last month. Come talk to me about that cheap natural gas in February when we are all suffering for these Russian sanctions and the New Green Deal. My electric is something like .08 per kWh before .02 in additional taxes. I’ve seen three plants shut down within 50 miles of me. I will bet you dollars to doughnuts my electric is 30% more expensive a year from now.

Clamoring for firewood, potbellied stoves; and now coal? That’s gonna leave a mark.

NYS gets zero percent of its electric from coal now.

We’re the poster boy for what NOT to do.

Yes it is OK for other countries to burn coal as they are non polluting. Ever see the air in china?

It must take a lot of fuel to ship coal from South Africa or Australia to Europe.

Have you ever heard of scrubbers? We have the cleanest coal burning plants in the world.

What pollutes less, US coal burning plants (with scrubbers) or nat gas plants? Not trying to start a war with you, but any input would be appreciated.

With modern pollution controls, coal is NOT dirty. Very little soot and ash come out of the stack. It’s mostly just by-product gasses from burning.

“Hmm. What country has by far the largest coal reserves on earth?”

Then take those reserves and factor in heat content of the various types.
