Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., announced the first ever hearing on gain-of-function research, which will be aimed at pinning down the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Throughout this pandemic, Dr. Rand Paul has led the effort to hold government officials accountable on the status of efforts being made to combat COVID-19, and the origins of this virus that has killed over 6 million people worldwide," a spokesperson for Paul told Fox News Digital. "This has been over a year-long process of getting Congressional Democrats to finally agree to a hearing, which will also be the first Congressional hearing on gain-of-function research. Dr. Paul looks forward to working with Subcommittee Chairwoman Hassan and hearing from expert witnesses during this critically important hearing that should’ve happened long ago."
The hearing, which is scheduled for Wednesday, comes a week after the Kentucky senator attempted to pass an amendment to the CHIPS-Plus Act that would have banned U.S. funding of gain-of-function research in China, with Democrats objecting to the amendment despite it passing unanimously in an earlier version of the bill last year.
In remarks on the floor of the Senate last week, Paul argued that there was significant evidence that the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic could be traced to a lab in Wuhan, China.

Two new studies have provided more evidence that the coronavirus pandemic originated in a market where live animals were sold in Wuhan, China.
The research, published on Tuesday by the journal Science, shows the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market was likely the early epicentre of the scourge that has now killed nearly 6.4 million people around the world.
It further bolsters the theory that the virus emerged in the wild rather than escaping from a Chinese lab...
“All this evidence tells us the same thing: It points right to this particular market in the middle of Wuhan,” said Kristian Andersen, a professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research in California, and co-author of one of the studies.
“I was quite convinced of the lab leak myself until we dove into this very carefully and looked at it much closer,” he said.
In one study, which incorporated data collected by Chinese scientists, University of Arizona evolutionary biologist Michael Worobey and his colleagues used mapping tools to estimate the locations of more than 150 of the earliest reported COVID-19 cases from December 2019...
In the other study, scientists analysed the genomic diversity of the virus inside and outside of China, starting with the earliest sample genomes in December 2019 and extending through to mid-February 2020...
Study co-author Joel Wertheim, a viral evolution expert at the University of California, San Diego, pointed out that lineage A was more genetically similar to bat coronaviruses, but lineage B appeared to have begun spreading earlier in humans, particularly at the market...

He said sampling an animal that was at the market at the time was now impossible.
“This is maybe as close to a smoking gun as you could get,” he added.

The only evidence they have ever offered is their own assertions. The lab is so close to the market that mapping the cases tells you nothing.
Claiming that a lab in the location working on this exact thing had nothing to do with it requires some pretty convincing evidence to the and there isn’t any. In fact the evidence points to a pretty compelling case that it was the lab and they were engineering exactly what got out.
And I thought he was a smart guy.

We were funding coronavirus research in the Lab.
Couldn’t we just ask the people we were giving money to what happened? They aren’t criminal masterminds. Threaten one with lying to the FBI and they will all fold like a cheap suit.

I’m all for finding the truth about this, but do these hearings ever accomplish anything? I know it gives the opportunity for major grandstanding.

I don't believe the lab leak theory either. I believe it was actively spread around the world in 2019.

The Gain of Function research Fauci used American tax dollars to fund is analogous to heavy use of a sharpening wheel for a medieval army's swords. Many more are the dead and debilitated that have resulted from it. As a medical doctor, Fauci knew what he was doing.
