COLUMBIA — The final push to next week’s primary has Attorney General Eric Schmitt joining, for the first time, those hoping to oust Mitch McConnell as Senate Republican Leader and Lucas Kunce dismissing the importance of St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones’ endorsement in the Democratic race.
Speaking to reporters after a campaign stop in a Columbia bar, Schmitt said Wednesday that McConnell has lost touch with Republican voters. Schmitt said he would prefer Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas or Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, who have both endorsed him.
“Mitch McConnell hasn’t endorsed me and I don’t endorse him for leadership,” Schmitt said.
Getting rid of McConnell was one of the earliest positions taken by one of Schmitt’s leading rivals for the GOP nomination, former Gov. Eric Greitens, when he entered the race. The third candidate atop the polls, U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler, on Thursday added her name to the list of candidates who will not back McConnell.
“We need a true conservative leader who will stand up to Joe Biden and turn things around,” Hartzler said in a prepared statement. “We need someone with backbone to fight against this train wreck.”
McConnell and former President Donald Trump have long-running antipathy that can be traced almost to the beginning of his presidency in 2017. This week, Trump taunted McConnell over polling showing him to be the least popular Senator and called him “disloyal” after video of McConnell blaming Trump for the Jan. 6 riot was shown in investigative hearings.
Removing McConnell has become a litmus test for Trump supporters.

Not Cruz. He’s into himself too much. Not Lee. The Mormon thing. He’ll pull his punches. Make it Rand Paul. The libertarian streak. Appeals to the young, at least their thought process. Problem is who votes. Are they all guilty of not voting in one of the others? Thune in line? Gimme a break.
Their goal is to do what is needed to help out those who offer them the kinds of stock tips and property deals that catapult them into multi-millionairedom. Their do-nothing jobs are not very cushy on a senator's salary.
McConnell, Thune, Barrasso, Blunt, Ernst, Scott, Scott, Lee, Crapo, Grassley, Shelby, Murkowski, Sullivan, Boozman, Rubio, Risch, Young, Braun, Moran, Cassidy, Collins, Hyde-Smith, Daines, Fischer, Sasse, Burr, Tillis, Hoeven, Cramer, Portman, Inhofe, Lankford, Toomey, Grahamnesty, Rounds, Cornyn, Romney, Capito, Lummis are all Bush League Republicans.
We MUST elect better Republicans.
A Soros DA who never had a legitimate case brought it to publicly smear Greitens because he’s not a stealth Lefty, and she got censured for it.
Yeah, he had an affair, but it was consensual.
Democrats don’t care if their candidates are rapists.
Now they are paying his wife big bucks to smear him, and spending millions of dollars on negative campaign ads.
This is the same thing they have done time and again... if they can’t defeat somebody at the polls, they gin up a scandal to get rid of them that way.
If we let them get away with it, we will never have real conservative Republicans in office, just Assistant Democrats.
The primary thing in Greitens’ favor is that George Soros targeted him specifically and took him out.
Soros is probably funding Schmitt, because he has more campaign money than God.
