And most of the value of college is from signaling: students learn little from college, but attending college signals to employers that someone is reasonably intelligent, disciplined, and conformist. If we stopped subsidizing college, employers would have to use other ( and cheaper) means to find such people. And we could all stop pretending that college students actually care about literature or history.
