Californians are moving to Mexico City and not everyone is thrilled about it
Hotair ^ | 07/27/2022 | John Sexton

You’ve probably heard something by now about the horde of Californians who’ve been leaving the state and moving to states like Idaho, Oregon and especially Texas. Because of the high property values in California, these people often move into the nicest neighborhoods in their new city or town of choice. And because there are so many of these transplants they often drive up the local property values. That’s not always appreciated by the locals.

Today the LA Times reports there’s a similar problem in Mexico City where Americans, many of them from California, are fleeing not just their state but their country in order to take advantage of the much lower property values in Mexico City.

The influx, which has accelerated since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and is likely to continue as inflation rises, is transforming some of the city’s most treasured neighborhoods into
expat enclaves.

In leafy, walkable quarters such as Roma, Condesa, Centro and Juarez, rents are soaring as Americans and other foreigners snap up houses and landlords trade long-term renters for travelers willing to pay more on Airbnb. Taquerias, corner stores and fondas — small, family-run lunch spots — are being replaced by Pilates studios, co-working spaces and sleek cafes advertising oat-milk
lattes and avocado toast.

And English — well, it’s everywhere: ringing out at supermarkets, natural wine bars and fitness classes in the park.

The reasons for the influx are mostly financial. The article notes that while $2,000 a rent won’t get you much in Los Angeles or San Francisco, that’s enough to rent a penthouse apartment in Mexico City. But at least some of the locals are sick of the Americans who are gentrifying the city.

Recently, expletive-laced posters appeared around town.

“New to the city? Working remotely?” they read in English. “You’re a f—ing plague and the locals f—ing hate you. Leave.”

That sentiment echoed the hundreds of responses that poured in after a young American posted this seemingly innocuous tweet: “Do yourself a favor and remote work in Mexico City — it is truly magical.”

“Please don’t,” read one of the kinder replies. “This city is becoming more and more expensive every day in part because of people like you, and you don’t even realize or care about it.”

A 38-year-old university professor labeled the trend “modern colonialism.”

“Mexico is classist and racist,” Bustos said. “People with white skin are given preference. Now, if a local wants to go to a restaurant or a club, they don’t just have to compete with rich, white Mexicans but with foreigners too.”

Anyway, the story says that most locals are extremely polite to the Americans who are moving in to their luxury apartments. But I guess it’s not just people in Boise, ID and Austin, TX who get fed up with Californians showing up with a lot of cash and no respect for the local customs. Unfortunately for Mexico City, the exodus from California isn’t likely to stop anytime soon.

“But you can buy houses in Mexico. Sometimes a house that you buy is on land that you lease, 99 years”

But what does that mean in a world falling apart? With a weakened America I would not trust ex-pat living at all.

Mexicans illegally in America pull around $144 billion a year out of this nations economy in remittances back to Mexico and all this while they receive billions in welfare benefits, free education and free health care.

I truly despise these people.

Foreigners can own property that is not within I think 100 kilometers of a border or a coast.

They have to agree to have that property subject to only Mexican courts and law.

The restrictions are in their constitution, which is an interesting read.

In Portland there were “Don’t Californicate Oregon” signs when I was there.

You and I may have to agree to disagree. I would rather live with Mexicans than with Californians. Good tacos and tequila. And they won’t tell me how to live my life, unlike the Californians.

“Mexico is classist and racist,” Bustos said. “People with white skin are given preference. ...”

DO NOT miss the fact his “white skin” reference ISN’T about Americans; it’s about the white, Spanish-descended citizens of Mexico. As in India, Mexico has it’s own apartheid caste system, and the little brown people don’t get a say.

So, American expats in Mexico are seen as exacerbating a longstanding problem; dressing an old, and festering wound with the salt of U.S. dollars. This kind of thing could foster resentment among the locals that would become a security problem that would more than offset the economics of such a living situation.

Too bad those signs didn’t work.

The Californias have Californicated Portland into a s**t hole.

Mexico city? I’ve been there....a few times. Its the worst air pollution anywhere because of all the people and because its built in a natural bowl surrounded by mountains. There’s nowhere for the car exhaust to go. My eyes would sting and water constantly the whole time I was there.

Its also quite unsafe. I asked some of my Mexican colleagues if nobody was married since I didn’t see any wedding rings on people’s fingers. They told me you don’t wear even that - lest you become a target for muggers. It was axiomatic that if you had money you would build high walls around your home so that nobody could tell how nice it was from the outside.

It was also dangerous on the roads. Those drivers are crazy and the rules of the road are governed by what the Germans call “Faustrecht”....literally Fist Right....the one with the biggest fist has the right. Even city busses routinely blow through red lights - do you want to be in that intersection when they do in your little car? I don’t think so.

Then there are the brutal professional kidnap gangs who target anybody who looks like they have money. They’ll chop off an ear or a finger and send that to your relatives to make sure they pay up quickly.

No thank you.

On the bright side the mexican cops might be a little less crooked than US ones.

Those signs were around at least 50 years ago. Didn’t do much good.

BTW, the restricted zone for property ownership in Mexico runs 50 km from coastlines and 100 km from national borders.

I even learned on youtube which is the top country that has the most American expatriates. Mexico.

It’s in the millions. Sammy Hagar said it multiple times. there’s a lot of gringos who live there.
