In their minds, they think they’re showing Trump’s “crimes” to the American public (i.e. swing voters) but they won’t dare allow anything to happen that might keep him out of the election.
They want Trump damaged but not so damaged that he can’t run for president because that would open up a whole different campaign environment.
Only the names would be changed. The smears and lies would be the same.
Are you sure?

I agree, definitely worth a shot.
I think political crimes require political consequences not legal consequences.
In other words, if politicians commit political crimes, let We the People sort it via the ballot box.
The Democrats have been getting this wrong for years - trying to convict Trump of various political crimes was not their job. Actually putting Trump supporters behind bars was a grotesque abuse of power.
This was a huge mistake on the part of Democrats - We the People chose President Trump, and we do not appreciate the Democrats overstepping their authority and trying to reverse our decision. Criminalizing politics was something the Founders were determined to prevent, which is why impeachment and removal of a President is nearly impossible.
The Founders wanted choosing a President to be entirely up to We the People - and that means removing a President is entirely up to us too.
The 2024 election (if it’s fair) will decide who the next President is - not the DOJ, not Congress, not the Senate, not SCOTUS.
Congress, SCOTUS and the DOJ do have an important role in the Presidential selection process though: making sure elections are fair - and in 2020, they failed miserably.
