COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State Board of Education member Kirsten Hill is challenging state Sen. Nathan Manning for his seat in a contest where voters must choose between a pragmatic, moderate incumbent willing to work with lawmakers of all stripes to get bills passed and a conservative who will stand by the ideals of the most conservative flank of her party.
Manning and Hill want to represent the newly drawn Ohio Senate District 13, which includes Lorain and parts of Erie and Huron counties. Cities in the district include Amherst, Elyria, Huron, Lorain, North Ridgeville, LaGrange, Norwalk, Oberlin and Wellington.
The primary will be one of the most closely watched in Northeast Ohio since Hill organized a bus from Lorain County to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021.
The winner faces Democrat Anthony Eliopoulos on Nov. 8. The district is considered a political tossup.
The primary is Aug. 2, a special election that had to be scheduled separately from the May primary due to redistricting litigation.
Manning of North Ridgeville is an attorney. His parents, Gayle Manning and the late Jeffrey Manning have served in the legislature. He’s seeking a second term in the Ohio Senate. His positions on many issues – from abortion to energy policy – have been relatively moderate.
