Russia’s top diplomat has admitted that the Kremlin’s overarching goal in Ukraine is to boot out President Volodymyr Zelensky
“The Russians are using the scorched-earth tactics across the entire Donbas. They fire from the ground and from the air to wipe off entire cities,” Donetsk Gov. Pavlo Kyrylenko said in televised remarks.
Lavrov argued that Russia was ready to negotiate a deal to end hostilities in March when Kyiv changed tack and declared its intention to rout Russia on the battlefield. He said the West has encouraged Ukraine to keep fighting.
“The West insists that Ukraine must not start negotiations until Russia is defeated on the battlefield,” Lavrov said.

Sergey Lavrov remarks were an about-face from the Kremlin’s line early [lying comments] in the RUSSIAN INVASION, when it repeatedly was emphasized that Russia wasn’t seeking to overthrow Zelensky’s government, even as Moscow’s troops closed in on Kyiv.
Russia later retreated from around the capital and turned its attention to capturing Ukraine’s industrial Donbas region in the east.
The fighting is now in its sixth month.

So maybe you will hear the truth this time; Russia intends to take ALL of Ukraine in order to secure defensible locations in the far western end of Ukraine. After that they will try to push past the Polish border. After that, the Baltics.
Zelenski inherited gov’t corruption of embedded Russian agents. Russian & Ukraine corruption in the police and in courts used to be at comparable levels, however, Ukraine is rebooting the police (by hiring new people and training them from scratch) and starting a court reform. So far, no seen complaints about the results.
On the other hand, Russia hasn’t done anything as drastic, Putin regularly jails high officials on corruption charges (some cases are actually described as power struggles).
Political corruption remains widespread in Russia (e.g., opposition figures are not allowed to run for office), However, Ukraine managed to perform three rounds of elections in two years with high marks from international observers. Political murders continue in Russia.
