A Florida police sergeant who was caught on video grabbing a female officer by the throat now faces criminal charges over the altercation, prosecutors announced.

Sunrise police Sgt. Christopher Pullease on Wednesday was hit with counts of felony battery on a law enforcement officer, tampering with evidence, assault on a law enforcement officer and assault on a civilian, according to the Broward State Attorney’s Office.

> You say there are “too many” like this. How many is too many? <

Chris Rock once did a monologue about that (it wasn’t in his famous “how not to get your ass kicked by the police” skit).

In this one, Rock said cops are like airline pilots. You can’t have even one “bad apple” airline pilot, a guy who will fly a plane into a mountain. Same goes with cops, Rock said. Because of the nature of their jobs, you can’t have even one “bad apple” cop.

Not having a single bad cop anywhere is obviously wildly unrealistic. Nevertheless, Rock has a point. Too often needed reform doesn’t happen because hey, it was just one bad apple.

As a side note, later in that same monologue Rock turned the whole topic into a purely cops vs, blacks racial thing. He was doing fine up until that point. Then he just had to play the race card.

Yep. It was his misfortune that the whole thing was caught in video.

There is such a thing as “gypsy cops”. These are cops who get fired by one department, then get hired by another one down the road that’s short on officers.

If this sergeant can avoid a felony conviction he just might become a gypsy cop.

1% of 700,000 is 70,000, so if only 1% of cops are bad, that’s still a lot of them

Your anecdotes have shaped your opinion. And that's a perfectly acceptable opinion to have.

My issue is when anecdotes form policy. Defund police was a complete disaster both politically and from a policing perspective. (I know you said you are against the defund movement.)

My mind is made up because I have been a cop for almost 20 years. Have I come across cops who are bullies? Absolutely. But I also know they are usually shunned within departments. The smaller the department, the larger problem they can be. There is no easy answer. Being a rude bully doesn't mean you should be fired. It means you need to be assigned to places where you have little, if any, interactions with the public. My department would put those types of cops on traffic detail where they would write tickets all day. Again, with smaller departments it's more of an issue because there are less places to put bullies, and it's difficult to get qualified hires.

Or can’t join the force because they are the wrong sex or race.

Every time I see something like this I always think of post traumatic stress disorder.

Yes, much of what you say is true. This was a very small department for example (and so was the story I didn’t tell..just a different town).

I will say there are a majority of law enforcement of the right sorts, just too many of the others who give the public a bad impression. Maybe Human Resources/management is the solution, get better hires.

If the suspect is in cuffs sitting in a back seat of a
vehicle where air doesn’t circulate real well, it could be
a very bad place to use pepper spray or another similar
product.

The strange thing is, that stuff can hang around a while.

Someone will need to drive that guy back to the station.

Seems like a bad idea all the way around.
