Rep. Zeldin took to Twitter to say be believed his suspected attacker would be 'instantly released under NY's laws'
A man who allegedly attacked Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., with a sharp object at a campaign stop in Perinton, New York, Thursday evening was charged with a felony and released from custody within hours of his arrest, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said.
The suspect, identified as David G. Jakubonis, 43 of Fairport, N.Y., was charged with attempted assault in the second degree.
He was arraigned in Perinton Town Court and released on his own recognizance, the sheriff’s department said.
Zeldin, who is the Republican candidate for governor in New York, predicted the alleged attacker would be released.

I heard it in a radio broadcast, but I will see if I can uncover a link.
Oh I agree that he should have been arrested, I’m just questioning those who insist he be charged with an attempted assassination. I think it sets a bad precedent.
In the video I saw I was unable to see any weapon in his hand when he attacked the candidate, though I could be wrong about that, and if so then that’s another matter and such a charge would be justified.
Man...you are stubborn. Want evidence? Watch this very clear close-up video.
See my post #44 to jimwatx. Attempted stabbing in the neck/face area with the weapon is clear as day.
Ok thanks for that, I apologize for being wrong. That is the first video I’ve seen that clearly showed the weapon in his hand ready to be used in the attack. So you guys are correct, this was an attempted assassination.
Yes, I see it clearly. His hand was batted away VERY quickly, but it is clear he was wielding the weapon with intent to apply it to the throat or face.
We are all wrong many times in our lives, so there is no need to apologize. Main thing is you now have evidence that it was an assassination attempt. Congressman Zeldin's fast reflexes caused him to grab the attacker's wrist and that saved his life.
That "cat" weapon might be small and the twin blades might only be 3-4 inches long, but they are wicked sharp. If he had managed to hit an artery, Zeldin would have been dead before EMT could get there.
I didn’t say he was a Democrat activist. Matter of fact I think he was a drunk mentally ill vet.
Let’s just say I just saw the FOX story a bit on this, and it was a rather lame “attack”, much like Jan 6 is one of the lamest attacks on anything I’ve seen.
Newscaster, e.g., stated he “lunged” at the gov candidate, but he just slowly and spcasually walked over. Then maybe he took the arm, or was that Zeldin pushing back with his arm?
Also some link stated he “yelled”…but it was more like just using a clear projecting voice. He wasn’t even sounding excited.
It was indeed bad form, but it’s not quite worth many of the adjectives I’ve heard used to describe it.
Thanks for showing clear video.
Still not sure this was clearly to be an attack, but he DID have it in his hand for sure.
As lame as this “lunge” seemed to be, I have to wonder if the attacker was loopy and high. He seemed very slow and not loud at all. Strangely subdued.
A physical assault (with a weapon) on a sitting member of congress and the assailant is out in hours, yet there are people sitting in jail for over 18 months for simply trespassing and taking selfies in the building where congress members “work”. This is beyond insane.
If we had a real U.S. Attorney, as opposed to a George Soros hack, the FIB would arrest and jail the assassin under federal law, 18 U.S.C. sec. 351 (c), (e), but that will never happen.
Huh must be a furry.🙄
There’s another picture of him trying to stab Lee in the neck.🤔
Another well known US Congressman from NY has expressed concerns about their personal physical safety multiple times. And might well recognize someone as being drunk and becoming disorderly quicker than the average person because of experience gained in their earlier career as a bartender. What would be the NY legal system reaction have been if a drunk white guy with a knife lunged at AOC?
