It may sound unthinkable, but one mom said reporting her son to the police felt necessary after she found signs her son was planning a killing spree and attack on his school and home.
Nichole Schubert, who first told The Wall Street Journal about her story, said she was cleaning her home in 2019 when she found her son's journal with plans that outlined how he would kill her at home first and then attack his Washington high school, where he was a 17-year-old senior at the time.
"It was very descriptive," Schubert recalled in an interview with "Good Morning America's" T.J. Holmes that aired Thursday. "It was just heartbreaking. I didn't, I didn't really want to know the details."
Schubert said seeing what her son wrote was devastating.
"That's my child, I, I gave birth to him, you know. It hurts a lot. It still hurts," she said.
But within hours, Schubert said she notified the authorities of her son and his plans.
"Your first instinct is, as a parent, is to protect your child. But at that point, I felt like if he is actually going to do these things, he would be safer in jail," Schubert said.
"It wasn't just about me and him at that point," she added. "It was about a whole school -- hundreds of people, hundreds of kids, children."
Schubert said she doesn't regret reporting her son.
"I believe I saved lives," she told "GMA."

She did the right thing. Now, let us pray that he gets the help he desperately needs.
Absolutely. She did what a parent should do. She probably saved his entire life from himself, at least enough to get him help.
If my mom found such a journal and threats, she wouldn’t need to go to the cops. My Dad would have been a far bigger deterrent than cops or the prospect of jail.
If those closest to someone about to do something illegal, stupid, dangerous, and/or deadly are not willing to step up, then those closest to them deserve the personal conflicts and turmoil they will be forced to live with for the rest of their life in the aftermath!
I’m sorry, but sometimes tough love is the only love some people are capable of accepting - so be it!
On a side note, this is why most red-flag laws WILL NEVER WORK...because those closest to the soon-to-be-perp don’t want to “get them in trouble” so they coddle them until it is too late and then all hell breaks loose.
Not to mention shaming people is considered “bullying” by our education system, so even those who are actually afraid of these would-be-killers have been TRAINED and INDOCTRINATED to not report others because that would be “judgemental” and “wrong”!
and the RATS will tell you she invaded his private space and had NO RIGHT to read it...
What are the choices for treatment? Psychotherapy? Medication (provided he continues to take them)? Or a lobotomy?
“I made the ,well known in our family, error of raising my voice to my mom”
Dude, you were flirting with the death penalty!
Only thing worse would have been laying hands on her. That would have resulted in a quick death and cheap burial.
I notice in the GMA link they interview the Uvalde murderer mother
but only quoher speakte what she said, Never hear or see her
I wonder if she is here illegally
The grandfather ( father’s father) speaks ok
Mine too.
“Or a lobotomy?”
Old Joe Kennedy chose the lobotomy option for his daughter because she had the audacity to not accept being controlled by him
It’s probably a good bet that he was already under some form of “treatment” by a psychiatrist that included one or more of the usual suspect psychotropics.
That’s exactly what I think is happening. I know all the liberal/communist powers that be hate that the mall shooting did not rack up as many kills as they planned.
I’m going to be honest, if you are planning some kind of mass murder spree that is inevitably going to end with you being dead or in jail forever I think you are beyond being deterred by the prospect of a parental beat down. You are already too far gone.
“What are the choices for treatment?”
They will probably send him to a special shrink that will program him for a future mass shooting.
