This isn't the 1940s where we could send out massive arsenals under Lend Lease and when we needed one for ourselves just manufacture entire fleets overnight.
One fighter aircraft takes a long time build and and test, plus we don't have modern ones just laying around. So to give them to Ukraine means they are taking them from US defense and they can't be replenished quickly. In other words, it weakens us while our rivals are building strength.
But hey, vital ally Ukraine is worth the risk I guess.
