Robert Reich: Perhaps it’s time to kick Joe Manchin out of the Democratic party
The Guardian ^ | 07/20/2022 | Robert Reich

Posted on 07/20/2022 9:10:58 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

At every opportunity, Manchin has sabotaged Democrats’ agenda. What’s going on here? It’s spelled m-o-n-e-y

After putting a final spear through the heart of what remained of Biden’s and the Democrat’s domestic agenda, West Virginia’s Democratic senator Joe Manchin now rejects any tax increases on big corporations or the wealthy – until inflation is no longer a problem.

This is rich, in every sense of the word. Raising taxes on big American corporations and the wealthy would not fuel inflation. It would slow inflation by reducing demand – and do it in a way that wouldn’t hurt lower-income Americans (such as those living in, say, West Virginia).

Manchin’s state is one of the poorest in America. West Virginia ranks 45th in education, 47th in healthcare, 48th in overall prosperity and 50th in infrastructure.

Tax revenue from corporations and billionaires could be used to rebuild West Virginia, among other places that need investment around America.

But Manchin doesn’t seem to give a cluck. After all, the Democrats’ agenda – which Manchin has obliterated – included pre-K education, free community college, child subsidies, Medicare dental and vision benefits, paid family leave, elder care, and much else – all of enormous value to West Virginia. (On a per-person basis, West Virginians would have benefitted more than the residents of all but two other states.)

It’s not as if Manchin has championed anything else Democrats have sought. Remember Manchin’s “bipartisan compromise” on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act? Nothing came of it, of course.

Nothing has come of any of the fig leaves Manchin has conjured to cover his unrelenting opposition to every other Democratic goal.

Few if any American-based global corporations or billionaires reside in West Virginia, but lots of money flows to Manchin from corporations and billionaires residing elsewhere.

50/50 becomes 49/50? Oh noes

Wouldn’t 50/50 become 51/49, thus giving control of the Senate to Republicans?

Fir some reason, Robert Reich thinks that the US Senate is exists only to rubber-stamp whatever the President feels like doing. I guess Mr. Reich was absent day his Social Studies teacher covered the topic.

I don’t think Reich has any formal academic training in economics. During the run-up to & the Clinton years he was at first billed as a labor economics expert over time he morped into just an economics expert. I think his actual academic training is something on the very squishy end of the social sciences.

Manchin’s probably already thinking in that direction. He likes his houseboat on the Potomac and his Maserati.

Manchin is to the demonrat party what a governor is to an engine, which regulates the engine’s speed to stay it below its redline and prevent the engine from destroying itself.

Manchin does the same thing for the demonrat party (and for America, too!) when he thwarts the demonrat plans for US.

Manchin was hired by voters. Short of criminal activity,
it’s up to them.

“Raising taxes on corporations would not fuel inflation”.

Corporations don’t pay taxes dumbass, corporations COLLECT taxes - from “consumers”. Leftists are ignorant of basic economics. Here also note well he is conflating “higher prices” with monetary inflation.

They would very much prefer their carefully grown, cultivated low information voting bloc not consider too carefully whom is fvcking them over, and why.

Inflation is always and ever a monetary phenomenon. Fewer and fewer people are fooled by the parlor tricks the “experts” are putting out there. (this also explains why they are ratcheting everything up to eleventy)

Don’t dare disagree with the ruling party elite.. you will be cast out or go to prison.

Ya know... the dems do things this way: don’t ask, just do it. They don’t dare try to stop us.. We rule..

Manchin barely survived in the Democrat wave year of 2018 . . . by a mere 19,000 votes. He has lots of options, including pulling a Jim Jeffords by declaring himself an independent and caucusing with Republicans.

Perhaps it’s time to buy Reich some stilts. It might help him see further and understand more.

I hope we don’t take him. The Republican party has been infiltrated with so many Democrats there’s no distinction.

The hilarious thing is these idiots think that will help them somehow. Its almost as if they don’t realize Manchin represents a state that Trump won by about FORTY PERCENT.

Manchin IS representing the people of West Virginia when he holds up the more radical plans of the Democrats.

By the way, if they kick Manchin out, then the Republicans hold the majority in the Senate. Duh.

Sure Bobby, and watch all those committee chairs and memberships change under the new majority. This is known as cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face.

If we accept the little dicatator role that Robert Reich gives himself, then we could say it’s time to kick Robert Reich completely out of “journalism”.

Back in the forties the Democrat leadership kicked the Stalinists out of the Party. This included forcing FDR to replace his VP in the 44 election.

It’s well past time to do it again.

We don’t need to rid the Dems of Manchin - we need to rid them of Reich and his ilk.

I’d like to see a midget punter try to drop kick Manchin out of the RAT party. That would be a hoot.
