In Washington state those “no guns allowed signs” are more of a “guideline”. Like no shirt, no shoes. If for some reason the establishment sees that you have a gun they can ask you to leave. If you don't, they can call the cops and you can be charged with a misdemeanor for trespassing.

The article said he had the long guns broken down in a backpack and spent over an hour in the restroom at the mall food court putting the gun together.
I don’t know how that works, but I was also wondering how he would walk to the mall unnoticed with several rifles.
