Uvalde report: 400 officers but ‘egregiously poor’ decisions

Nearly 400 law enforcement officials rushed to a mass shooting at a Uvalde elementary school, but “egregiously poor decision-making” resulted in more than an hour of chaos before the gunman who took 21 lives was finally confronted and killed, according to a damning investigative report.

The nearly 80-page report was the first to criticize both state and federal law enforcement, and not just local authorities in the South Texas town for the bewildering inaction by heavily armed officer

“Law enforcement responders failed to adhere to their active shooter training, and they failed to prioritize saving innocent lives over their own safety," the report said.

The gunman fired approximately 142 rounds inside the building — and it is “almost certain” that at least 100 shots came before any officer entered, according to the report.

— The commander of a Border Patrol tactical team waited for a bullet-proof shield and working master key for the classroom, which may have not even been needed, before entering the classroom.

— No one assumed command despite scores of officers being on the scene.

— A Uvalde Police Department officer said he heard about 911 calls that had come inside from the classroom, and that his understanding was the officers on one side of the building knew there were victims trapped inside. Still, no one tried to breach the classroom.

The report was written by an investigative committee from the Texas House of Representatives. The findings set in motion at least one fallout: Lt. Mariano Pargas, a Uvalde Police Department officer who was the city's acting police chief during the massacre, was placed on administrative leave.

“It’s a joke. They’re a joke. They’ve got no business wearing a badge. None of them do,” Vincent Salazar, grandfather of 11-year-old Layla Salazer, said Sunday.

I just realized last night how many officers showed up.

I remain flabbergasted. That many cops showed up, and let this thing go on for so long?

The chief should be fired and sent to work as a janitor.

“Law enforcement responders failed to adhere to their active shooter training, and they failed to prioritize saving innocent lives over their own safety,” the report said.

Or “cowardice in the face of the enemy”.

There was a shooting several years ago that came up again because of the greenwood mall shooting

Teacher threw a basketball then tackled the shooter

One person can save dozens..it just takes the right person. Yesterday it was a 22 year old who ignored the mall owner gun restriction that saved dozens of lives

Mariano Pargas had as much business being acting Police Chief at Uvalde shooting as an auto mechanic changing oil on a nuclear bomb.

People are starting to figure out that police forces are not armies. An army is trained to risk their own lives to take out the bad guys. D-Day and Omaha beach is a perfect example. They literally risk death, and it’s part of their job description.

The number one concern of most cops is their own personal safety. That’s why they approach cars during normal traffic stops the way they do, or “block off” an active shooter area, rather than go in (as miliary would) to take out the shooter.

The closest thing they have to military is the Swat team. Rank and file cops really are mainly just “secretaries with guns”.

Police try to figure out “who did it”. Keeping it from happening to you in the first place is YOUR job. This is why the only cops that went in in any sort of timely manner were those trying to save their own family members. And the cops tried to stop them!

What a joke. Actually, no. But if it wasn’t so serious, it WOULD be high comedy.

Family members of the victims in Uvalde received copies of the report Sunday before it was released to the public.

For the masses. “egregiously poor decision-making” can lead to incarceration and in some cases, execution. No such fate shall befall the officers. Those police who literally protected the terrorist from those who attempted to intervene on behalf of the children should be publicly executed. Many more officers should be incarcerated and hopefully receive prison yard justice.

I still say they were not allowed to respond. The order was give, Biden and Pelosi needed a high body count so they could pass laws to take away your guns. Children be damned. Feds were on site.

Police departments are hyper-focused on protocol these days. And a big part of that protocol is keeping officers safe. That is good but when it becomes the dominant focus, the police lose sight of what they are supposed to do - protect citizens. Its the way our whole society is going - being hyper-focused on being safe and not taking any risk.

“Lt. Mariano Pargas, a Uvalde Police Department officer who was the city’s acting police chief during the massacre, was placed on administrative leave.”

With pay, no doubt. And that useless sack of monkey feces of a School District Police Chief still has his badge and his gun.

Disgraceful.

Steve McCraw, the head of Texas DPS, has called the police response an abject failure.

The committee didn’t “receive medical evidence” to show that police breaching the classroom sooner would have saved lives, but it concluded that “it is plausible that some victims could have survived if they had not had to wait 73 additional minutes for rescue.”

An excellent way to put it.

Very few men are leader type men. The vast majority are followers. The problem arises in that we have hierarchical institutions. Almost always, the men who float to the top are not leader types. They are those who represent the least danger to the people in the next higher position, therefore they get promoted as “leaders.” I witnessed this throughout my working career. When you have a dithering “follower” occupying the position of leader everyone defers to him. Even if you have a leader in amongst the ranks, he is quickly ferreted out and done away with as he is a scary danger to the “leadership.” This is how you end up with all these armed “followers” standing around with their thumbs in inappropriate places and nobody going in and doing the work that needs to be done.

In my opinion, this is what we have in the federal government and the military right now. Heck, we even have an “admiral,” a civilian who was promoted because the alternative was sending a politically correct person to prison for the hideously bad medical decisions he made. We can only pray to God we survive.

Michael Brown, whose 9-year-old son was in the cafeteria at Robb Elementary on the day of the shooting and survived, came to the committee’s news conference Sunday carrying signs saying “ We Want Accountability” and “Prosecute Pete Arredondo.”

Brown said he has not yet read the report but already knows enough to say that police “have blood on their hands.”

“It’s disgusting. Disgusting,” he said. “They’re cowards.”

Still there is no mention of looking through the windows to evaluate what was happening in the classroom, or using the windows and a sniper to take out the gunman, or even as a distraction while they breached the door. I understand the fact that it was chaotic, but that is not an excuse for trained police.

And it’s hard to believe that the overwhelming majority of 400 men were all cowards. The whole thing stinks of an agenda by those in charge (those issuing orders that the others were reluctant to disobey) to allow this to happen for an evil reason.
