South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said Friday that she has reversed her initial plan to call a special legislative session this year after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
When the Supreme Court’s decision first leaked in May, Noem tweeted that she would “immediately call for a special session to save lives” if Roe was overturned. South Dakota already had a trigger law that immediately banned abortions after the ruling came out in June.
Noem, who has since shown caution in the evolving landscape of abortion politics, is among prominent Republican governors across the country who are navigating an issue that threatens to divide the party while giving Democrats a potential election-year boost.
“In the last few weeks, it has become clear that South Dakota is the most pro-life state in the nation,” Noem said in a statement, pointing to a ban that allows a woman to have an abortion only if it will save her life, as well as a website she launched that directs pregnant women to state resources.
Noem said she has the support of top lawmakers, as well as influential anti-abortion groups, in holding off legislative action until next year.
For abortion rights advocates, the governor’s announcement provided little comfort as they strategized how to restore access to the procedure in South Dakota.
The American Civil Liberties Union of South Dakota said it would turn its attention to the November election and would closely follow the 2023 legislative session.
“Politicians who do not believe in protecting the civil rights and liberties of their constituents have no business in governors’ mansions, in state attorneys general’s offices or in state legislatures,” Libby Skarin, the ACLU’s campaign director, said in a statement.

Careful. The Noem Gnomes will be here shortly to provide Kristi puffer services.
Has some county judge in South Dakota overruled the Supreme Court yet?
SO typical of this type of politician: when push comes to shove, their knees get week.Let's be honest. "This type of politician" is a typical woman controlled by emotions not logic.
Women's emotions cloud any logical thinking they might have.
Emotions are unpredictable. This, emotions, is why women should never be in positions of power, especially President.
Same with trans women (men) in women’s bathrooms and sports - happily supported stopping it and when the low came up wilted like Mike Pence.
I agree with you. Abortion is way down the list as to importance despite the medias attempt to push it.
These Noem haters prove that when you hate you can’t think straight.
“Just as it was easy to pass abortion “trigger laws” secure in the belief that a) Roe would never be overturned”
Yes, excellent example. Never thought of that.
Those of you attacking her fail to explain yourselves. If there’s already a trigger law banning abortion on demand why would she need a special session? Make it make sense or are you DeSantis bots?
Yeah, that “threatens to divide the party” line jumped out at me, too. The author just made that up with zero facts to support it.
Why waste time and money bringing legislators to work to pass a law that already is there. No abortion allowed in South Dakota. Talk about conservatives being wasteful spenders. The fiscal part of conservatives have certainly gone out the window.
I am not following this, is it already banned or not. It seems to read that there’s already been in place. There’s no rush on the legislative session. But I have a legislative session?
See what happens when you put people on a pedestal? Seems it so many times the last 15 years. Will you learn?
There are no "trigger laws" that will survive the next election cycle.
Why in the H do you support government spending on a special session that is 100% unnecessary?
That’s the question.
“Why do you insinuate Palin wasn’t really qualified?”
You are reading something that was never stated. I said I believe Noem is less qualified than Palin, meaning Palin was qualified in her day and era and Noem likely is not in this era and day.
You are apparently one of those that just cannot get enough of Palin, and take offense to imaginary interpretations of anything seemingly derogatory towards her.
But since you brought it up, in this era, as in today’s world, neither are qualified. It takes someone with extreme will power, quick thinking and extensive resources to stand up to the communist powers of today. For today’s political environment, neither Palin or Noem qualify.
Many fell in love with Palin based on her good looks and equated her good looks with her abilities and defend her with extreme passion. Noem IMO is better looking, actually quite a hottie. But just because this girl is hot does not make her presidential material.
Thus far the best qualified are Trump and DeSantis.
Humans have to continue to learn the same lessons.
When Marco Rubio campaigned against Charlie Crist he sounded sooo good; said the right things about the Constitution. I told family that Rubio was the real deal.
Shortly after he was elected, it became clear to me that most of what he said was something he rehearsed for effect.
I guess it is possible he was sincere when he campaigned and was later pulled to the dark side.
Still, he is somewhat better than Crist.
